Latest E.ON price rise
Just got my bill direct debit setting letter for the year from E.ON. Says that monthly price is going up from £50 a month to £75 (£900 a year). I was already about £90 in debit. I live alone in an all electric two bed house.
Waffle at the end about energy costs rising 60% and last major supplier to hike up prices because they wanted to protect winter bills...as if they really care that much!!!
And I remember not so long ago when I thought £35 a month was pricey!

£900 per year for an all electric household isn't astronomical I don't think (especially if you have to use the heating a bit) at current prices.
Have you checked they are cheapest in your area?
Do you have storage heaters / are you on E7 or E10?I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

If you were paying £50 a month and ended up £90 in debt, you were paying about £7.50 a month to little, so even if there wasn't a price rise you would need to be paying £57.50 + £7.50 to catch up on your balance = £65 a month.
So, working backwards your new payment for consumption is £67.50, a rise of £10 (~17%).0 -
I'm on E7 (heatwise scheme) with storage heaters. Heaters come on during cheap rate periods throughout the day and night. Last time I checked it was cheapest.
SwanJon's maths shows that it's not a huge hike in price and I can afford it so can't complain.Prof planning and public rights of way person. Studies all things tech!0 -

I thought Scottish and Southern was the last "major" to raise prices on 1 April, EoN I think went up on 8 Feb.0 -
My fault. They said one of the last.:)Prof planning and public rights of way person. Studies all things tech!0

I've had a similar experience with E-On within the last couple of days. My last bill in April showed that I owed £175.56 or an underpayment of £14.63 per month over the last year. I was paying £93 per month up to this point.
The letter duly arrived saying that my monthly payment was being changed to £171 per month. I called to contest the change and was told that the lowest they could make the direct debit was £140. I closed the conversation saying I'd shop around for another deal. Unfortunately, the deal I have is the best available for me.
You can imagine my surprise when I logged on to my account and found the monthly payment had been set at £134! 'So they can go lower!', I thought. I duly wrote an e-mail to them and await a reply.
I knew the payment was short but nowhere near the amount they were looking for. Looking for an extra £78 per month when I had underpaid by only £14.63 per month is just daylight robbery regardless of what's happening in the gas and electricity markets. If they insist on pushing this through then it will put me into an overspend situation and I will have to borrow to make ends meet. A complaint to energywatch will be on the cards if I don't get some satisfaction.0 -
don't forget if you wre underpaying by £15 per month for the last 12 months you would have to increase DD by twice that (£30) going forward to cover your usage and pay off the debt over the next 12 months. That is before any price rises are taken into account!
I would "think" £140 would be about right given the above - but £170 is taking the proverbial.

Thanks mute... that didn't cross my mind. However, what I forgot to mention in my previous post was that I had settled the outstanding amount before they reviewed my account. I've done this before in the past but it's never got to this kind of level.0

Yes PL, these predictive direct debit systems seem pretty flaky at times. At one time I was regularly over £100 in credit, then suddenly I was £100 in debit. I know it can't be easy to predict but you get the feeling that it's often left to the computer with little human input..unless you complain of course!Prof planning and public rights of way person. I`ve had a letter too. I`m £224 in debt so mine is going up from £65 to £100. Yes it`s a big increase but I am a fair bit in debt. I`ll leave it at £100 but if I notice that I`m getting in credit it will be reduced. I could have increased it months ago but I decided to wait for them to do it.0
