glad you got your card - I think you maybe mean the post date was 24/APRIL/2008 rather than May.
It would be interesting to know when it actually went into the mail system.

Who said there were no markings on the letter?

I thought the OP said that
    post date was 24/05/2008.
and as it's only the 15th May today, I thought she must have meant April.

At least the card's not gone missing, even though the OP can't use it.

I received a new bank card other month which didnt need to be reactivated but then it was a replacement card as opposed to a new card as the old one was lost

Mine was a brand new account and card and still didn't need activating. Appears as though debit cards don't no matter what.

Sorry, custardy, I misread that part of the OP's update.

It makes you wonder how long these letters sit around within the companies before being put into the mail system.

theres many ways letters can be delayed both before and after entering the mail system
also remember downstream access where the likes of TNT pay RM a low price to deliver mail
often these companies hold mail so they can get a greater bulk discount when putting it ito downstream access

And it is quite possible for a letter to be sent today and arrive within a day or two but have the date on the actual letter say April whatever if post marks are recent.

Of course, Royal Mail and any other delivery service will, from time to time, fail to live up to our, and their own, expectations but I do feel that the vast majority of mail is delivered properly and in good time and we shouldn't underestimate the hard work of those sorting the post and delivering it to us.

On the other hand, the embarassment that is a RM MDEC at peak times is quite another story and how any company can run one area of its operations quite so badly year after year, I'm not sure.
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.
