I am getting a bit peed off and scared at the same time. I recently got myself a current account with overdraft from my bank. 3 weeks ago I was sent my pin and as of yet no card. when I phoned my bank they said let it take its time. but if this ends up in someone else's hands you can use a card without the pin over the net. How do I check up on this. YEAH I KNOW RM SUCKS.

If you check your bank statement regularly then you'll spot fraudulant activity.

Not sure how Royal Mail are to blame for the time it takes a bank to send out a card - there's no benefit to RM in holding onto letters for 3 weeks and banks can be pretty slow at a lot of things.
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.

Can't the bank verify whether or not they have actually sent the card yet, that way at least you would know whether there was a potential problem with RM or that it's just the bank being slow!

I had the same issue with a credit card I applied for recently, received my PIN notification but the card didn't turn up until 3 weeks later, so it may just be the bank being slow to issue the cards.

I think the question you should be asking of your bank is 'When did you post the card?'

You're naming Royal Mail on the Consumer Vent Board, and whilst I appreciate that RM can (and do) get things wrong, it's a bit unfair at this stage as you don't really know whether the Bank have actually put it into the postal system.

New credit cards usually come with a sticker that says you must phone to activate it, I'm not sure if debit cards are the same.

I just opened a bank account with Co-Op and I didn't need to call and activate the debit card. Also I received the debit card but I haven't received the pin yet. Opposite problem to OP.

Check your bank account regularly until your card arrives and report any fraudulant activity ASAP so you can't be held liable. Also contact your bank and find out when the card was actually despatched.

Yeah, like allowing fraudsters to redirect your mail on-line (using a stolen credit card number and no other proof of ID) and then insisting that they will not reveal the identity of the fraudster to the police . . .

Yes, this happened to us. RM refused to stop the redirection as well, despite the fact that we took ID to our local sorting office as proof of whom we are. They prefer to protect the fraudster despite the fact that mail theft is a criminal act.

    Bunch of idiots.

so it sounds like new credit cards sent through the post are subject to more security than debit cards. I couldn't remember whether my last debit card had to be activated or not.

it sounds like you had a legitimate complaint against Royal Mail. That actually sounds like a shocking attitude for RM to take.
However, in this instance, there's no proof so far that Royal Mail are actually at fault.

And before anyone asks: "no, I don't have any connection with RM".

you should have recieved a letter at the address informing you of a redirection being set up on the address

Thats correct. I received my card a couple of days ago before receiving the pin and i didn't require activating. However, I don't know if this is the case for all debit cards.

Would I be accused of being a little bit cynical if I pointed out that fraudulent use of a Credit Card is using the Bank's money; fraudulent use of a Debit Card is using your money ?!
