Voucher Usage in Supermarkets

There seem to be numerous conflicting reports over the use of vouchers / coupons in various supermarkets, do we have any experts (possibly checkout people of the main supermarkets (Tesco's, Sainsburys, Asda, & Morrisons)), who could perhaps clarify the issues and give us an up-to-date view of actual policy. Or maybe someone can point us to a statement from the supermarkets themselves on the use of coupons.

I am fairly new to the use of coupons, have used a few recently, and all have been taken without bother in Tesco's, even when the product has not been purchased. But from various threads I hear other who have not been able to use these, surely there must by a common policy issued by HQ on such a matter, for all the stores in the chain to adhere to.

I read and thanked a lady who worked on the Tesco's checkout yesterday for a mail she wrote on the Tesco's policy on coupons (which I thought was very good) but have been unable to re-locate her comments, (maybe linked back into a out-of -date thread). If she reads this it would be worth her re-posting her comments.

Different stores (and checkouts) have different policies even when it goes against Store (nationally) policy - however most Tescos that I have dealt with have been happy to accept coupons when I have pointed out it is Tesco policy to accept them.

According to ASDA HQ they DO NOT accept coupons in this manner (even though they actually DO most of the time in store)

I recieved the following email from Tescos:

Any coupons, which display the Tesco logo, are Tesco specific. We only accept these if the products referred to on the coupons are purchased. This is because we negotiate savings with our suppliers on the condition that these actual products will be purchased.

With regard to coupons from brand name manufacturers, we are happy to accept one, even if you have not purchased the product. The coupon must be in date and Tesco must sell the item. If you present more than one identical coupon, then you must purchase the same number of products.

This also applies to coupons printed from the Internet. These will only be
accepted at the discretion of the Store Manager.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain our policy.

I think it's pot luck which branches of supermarkets take coupons. Also which cashier! Tesco usually do but today I was told it was one of each maximum 3 if I hadn't bought the goods. yesterday there was no limit. I just hand them over and ask which ones they will take. They usually soon tell you!

The local Morrisons do not take any vouchers unles you buy the goods. when it was Safeway they took any vouchers and no limit.

Of course MSE's don't go to stores where they don't take vouchers hah ha.
  • Some cashiers don't realise that Tesco are going to claim back the cost of the coupon. They seem to think that each coupon is coming out of their salary. It isn't uncommon to be treated like a criminal when doing this at my local store

It differs SO much from store to store, day to day, supervisor to supervisor and cashier to cashier, I'm afraid. It's also the one biggest question we get on here about coupons - who takes what. Everyone has had different experiences from their local stores on different days.

Even when you have a letter/email from Head Office, this is often overriden at store level by the supervisor or customer services. I have found that ONLY Waitrose is consistent in its policy - any coupon, any amount, as long as that store stocks the product, coupon is in date and isn't an internet print-out. With our local Asda and Tesco's, I don't shop according to how many coupons I have, I just do a small shop and feel lucky if they take anything off at all. Hope this makes sense.

i am a bit confused by all this too. I was under the impression that Tesco would accept coupons as long as they stocked the product.

I have £4 in vouchers off the new Pampers Feel n Learn nappies. As i no longer need these, as my daughter has just recenlty toilet trained, i asked if i could use them against Pampers Active Fit nappies for my 9 month old son. These vouchers were sent to me by Pampers, they are not Tesco vouchers.

The first reply i had was this

    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry - these coupons come from our marketing department and must be used against the product specified on the coupon. If you bought another pamper product then the system wouldn't recognise the promotion and the discount would not be allocated.

I can only apologise for the disappointment caused by this.

I then replied to say that the vouchers were from Pampers not Tesco, and received the following reply

    Thank you for your email.

Still the same - if its a branded coupon. If you try to but another pamper product rather than the one specified then there would be a problem

    CONFUSED???

Maybe i should take the vouchers to cust serv at local Tesco and see what they say?

I think like most of us - we've been accepted in some stores and not in others.
I've found the easiest way is just to try in store and not alert the supervisors / managers. Choose a young, female collegue - and make conversation with them. I've found this makes a difference.

Lincoln Tescos will accept three vouchers for things you haven't brought. They are all very hot on it. I've also had them getting a bit over excited when I've handed over say 6, so I have to point out that I have actually brought 3 of the items on the coupons.

    mellyp,
If you normally shop in Tescos, I would just hand them to the cashier next time you go to the checkout and say "can you see if these work". They'll take what they think they are allowed to and hand back any that they can't. I felt momentarily embarrissed the first time I did this incase someone called me a penny-pincher, but you get over it ;)

I think they will only take one or two of them without you buying the product unless you get someone who just doesn't know/care (try picking a young bloke - they seem to care the least).
