Whilst I am under no illusion as to how easy it would be to live off of benefits, the point is that the OP should get his income from benefits taken into account.IB is there to help him continue to live his life, it is a benefit given to him it doesn't belong to the tax payer.

The OP already has amortgage which he originally got through employment, he now services that mortgae through his benefits and just wants to know if he could get another mortgage with his benefits taken into account.
To insinuate that he is planning to blag the system into buying him a house is not fair.

To the OP I would try posting this on the mortgage board maybe with a bit more information as to value of current property, outstanding mortgage and details of income and it's source, together with expected cost of newe house.

OP - If I were you I would ask this on the mortgages board *Click Here* as they are mostly harmless over there. There are several posters who are mortgage brokers who would answer your question with a little less aggression and bias than some here have.

I am simply asking a question: If that house is PAID FOR by the tax payer, shouldn't it's ownership (or %age of it's ownership paid for by the taxpayer) return to/remain with the tax payer when he no longer needs it.

It's not an unreasonable, insulting or unfair question.

SquatNow, maybe not an unreasonable, insulting or unfair question, but it was somewhat aggressive in the way it was asked. It would, however, be an interesting discussion if posted as another thread / on Discussion Time.

Do you believe that anyone who gets taxpayers money should have to give the house back to the taxpayer at some point should they have a mortgage whilst getting 'tax payers money'? Those who are on DLA, CA, Tax Credits (Child and Working), even *almost* everyone who has a child and receives CHB? Do older people who get free TV licenses, pensions and winter fuel allowances also have to repay them out of the sale of the estate when they die? Landlords who rent to people who recieve any of the 'tax payers money' also have to hand it back on the sale of the house?

An interesting idea, not one that I think would be too popular, though.

The 'taxpayers money' from IB I am currently getting monthly is nowhere near as much as the tax I paid monthly before having to take medical retirement. On that basis I could happily argue that all I am doing is getting my own money back. I still pay tax now. I'd estimate that if I stay on IB to age 65, I will have received back about 20% of the tax I have paid.

Why should it have to be given back?

please ignore Squatnow-- he posts fairly often and it is obvious to everybody except himself that he is a bitter and selfish person who does not think that anyone who has something that he does not (but does want) should be allowed to keep it. He is over the moon that some people are "going" to lose thier homes in the credit crunch and will have no useful information for you. Having said that, he is quite good to laugh at.

Personally, I don't think it should be paid back.

Squat Now seems to think that money from benefits is put into pots...'Look dear, the tax payers money has arrived in our bank account, lets go buy a house / car / ipod', and that when they no longer *need* a house / car / ipod then the benefit should be paid back. My belief is that benefits are something that a civilised society has in order that those who need extra help are given it when they need it, no issues with it being unfair, undeserved ,or paid back. Neither should the sum of all tax paid by that person limit how much help they should get. Sadly some people have abused this system and it now seems that everyone who has some form of benefit has to justify themselves due to those who take the pee.

My argument is that if Squat Now believes this money should be paid back then everyone should pay it back, not just those who get what he believes to be easy to get benefits. Almost all families get CTC or CHB, many retired people have private pensions and 'tax payer' pensions, in Squat Nows world, should all these people pay back this money if they sell their house / car / ebay the ipod? I asked as I was interested if this is what Squat Now means, personally I would hate to live in that world.
