Are you referring to the supermarkets or the supplier. As it is the supplier and not the supermarket that foots the bill for BOGOF's.

I was unaware that it is the supplier that footed the bill for bogofs. However, if the supplier can afford to foot that bill, then surely my point remains, that the food was overpriced in the first place. If the supplier can afford to supply food at the bogof rate, then surely they must regularly be charging the supermarket over the odds for stock. If they charged less, then the Supermarket could pass on that saving...or am I missing something here...?

The supplier can't afford to turn down the 'offer' from the supermarket of supplying BOGOFs as if they do, the supermarket threatens to change suppliers.

If the supplier is Gillette or Unilever, no biggie. If it's a farmers' co-operative it really hurts their income.

BOGOFs are illegal in Germany FWIW.

I would miss them, shopping online in Tesco I used to be able to get up to £50 easily with BOGOF. Then the price for the 2nd Item was taken off after payment, and with discount codes etc sometimes only paid £10-£15 for the shopping. I still have some pasta sauces that I bought this way ;ast time they were on BOGOF.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Ah, I wondered why we never got any BOGOF's here in Germany.

I must say that I do miss them, though my style of cooking/shopping has changed since I last was in the UK, (thanks to MSE!), so perhaps I'd be less enthralled by them now.

I did watch a programme once about the people who supply veg etc to the big supermarkets.. and they do indeed bear the cost of any BOGOFS the supermarkets insist on, and they do this wether they can afford it or not.

as a family of 6 yes bogofs are of use to me but only when they are wanted...ie

    bogof on weetabix..........cool:D

    bogof on whiskey...........not cool:mad:

I dunno... If I had four kids, I think I'd want the whisky over the weetabix....

I find BOGOFs OK, sometimes, but to be honest, I usually buy the Smart Price or Value store lines and nothing is ever cheaper than that.

i like getting my bogof's but i am sure that the single prices would not be at 1/2 the price they would probably only knock 1/3 off

Now, those I hate! Not good enough. And here I do recognise they are only on junk food, so am not tempted. There's just something about a good bogof... The only thing that beats that are the Lidl 75% sales. The first one I came across was a fruit and veg - after buying the whole stock I was really surprised that the sale was on for a whole three weeks. Such bargains.

Do you know anything about how supermarkets work and how they treat there suppliers?

If you don't Suggest that you read Trolley Wars: The Battle of the Supermarkets by Judi Bevan. A bit of eye opener. And will show you the power of supermarkets.

If you in business I suppose it is better to let a whole field of cabbages go over and be wasted than to let a supermarket have a BOGOF offer on. Better to have nothing than something I suppose

And food is not overpriced it has been under priced for years. Think of the value lines they are used to get you in to buy more.

There is a percentage of people who whinge about food costs who think nothing of smoking 40 a day and having a HD tv sat in the corner which cost thousands of pounds and spend £65 a month on sky. But will not pay £3-4 for decent sausages

Higher food prices are here to stay. I am starting to cut stuff off out of the budget like bought treats. They will be homemade or not at all. But reasons are not jsut monetary but health wise.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this last week, I much prefer half price items because it lowers my shopping bill and I come in even more under budget!
