Broadband Almost Stopped

Hi all,
Anyone having problems with broadband (BT) in the Malmesbury area. Mine's at dial up speeds (or less). I've checked my hardware and settings and all seems as it was. I've changed filters and checked plugs and cabling to no avail. All I'm getting is the bloody call centre in India and they are no help what-so-ever.

With BT, the speed you will get it dependant on how far away from the hub you are. The further away, the slower the speed.

Is this a new occurance or has it always been like that?

This is a new occurance and I usually get about 4-5 Mbits.

where exactly are you measuring the speed, only "REAL" indicator is on the router you are using check there first as it may be a problem on the exchange or line

Wrong. Are you thinking of distance from the exchange? Even if you are, that is not unique to BT, it happens with ANY ADSL provider.

Sorry yes I meant the exchange and I didn't say just with BT. I said it happens with BT as I know they do have ADSL. And most other providers who also use ADSL also use BT phone lines, so once again, BT.

Virgin don't though and you always get top speeds, and free service if you complain a lot :)

I thought that would be what you meant :)

Virgin do offer an ADSL service btw in non cable areas.

When I buy a house I am using Virgins checker to make sure I get cable. F*** being 5 miles from an exchange, I need SPEED.

I'm using speedtest.net, I always use this so I can get a comparison from day to day. It normally reports 4-5 Mbits down. As far as I know the exchange hasn't moved :rotfl:

Have you got a BT home hub (router)?
If so have you tried a full reset to defaults?

I have a d-link router that hasn't given me hassle for about 4 years, but that's not to say it hasn't given up the ghost.
BT has just rung me to ask if I'd like a £2 discount per month and all I have to do is sign on for another 12 months. Poor lass got a blow by blow account of my issues with BT and she's looking into it. Funny how things work eh?
I've just changed my filter in case that's shot; still the same. I think I'm right in thinking that if I reset my router enough times the network (BT) assumes a fault and throttles the connection for stability. I've reset quite a few times whilst fiddling with settings so I may have made it worse...........
