Were you asked for your car's V5 though?

No because it was by the Eurotunnel Security, as I said earlier it's French law to carry your documents with you.

One of the additional checks at Eurotunnel is to have your steering wheel and door cards swiped with an handheld explosives sniffer. The staff are polite: "May I check your steering wheel sir?" I imagine if you say no then it's the full arm length rubber glove treatment.:D

In my experience, yes there are. see the link to the other thread. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=172908 I was gobsmacked to find I could save £160 just by clicking on another place for the same thing!

The site you booked with mentions day trips on Eurotunnel from £52. On Eurotunnel itself these start at £44. A sample fare in July and August is £243.79 on Ferrybookers, £274.84 on Aferryto or £261 on Ferrycheap, against Eurotunnel's £239

Back to the subject of the thread, it's been quite normal to be subject to security checks for some time, for both tunnel and ferries, though the tunnel is a bit more obvious

just come back from going through the tunnel again. This time Customs ran a kind of wand over the steering wheel and subjected our passports to a computer check.

I think it must be to check for explosives.

I found that French drivers are becoming far more aggressive, so it's a money, no claims and aggravation-saving tip to expect them to pull out at all times from behind slow-moving traffic irrespective of whather anything is overtaking.
