Porting query

Bit of an unusual one here I think. My wife would like to sign up to the O2 free motorola v220 and 'free' 12 months line retal (via cashback) and she would like to take her Orange PAYG number with her. Nothing too unusual there I know, but, she would also like to keep her Orange PAYG credit (she has a fair few quid left on it). Can this be done? She would obviously need a new number from Orange but would they do it? Would they charge? Any help out there guys and gals?

Thanks in advance

I don't know if this is possible but feel I must warn you about porting:

Once the number has been ported it will no longer be considered as the "same network" by any carriers - ie. O2 will charge people who call her as if she were an "other network" customer and so will orange.

That may be true then, cos it was about 18 monts ago when I discovered this (as I was about to port my number from T-Mobile to O2). I just used up some of my 300 free texts to tell people my new number. If that is the case though then good (I will do a bit of checking in to this).

If a number is ported from say Orange to 02, then Orange will recognise it as a cross-network call and 02 will regard it as on-network.

BT however, will regard it as still being on Orange for charging purposes.
  • Going back to the original question....
I ported my number from orange payg to BT contract and managed to transfered my balance (£20 ish) over to my daughters orange payg so yes you can transfer to another orange sim as I did, and no they didn't charge for this, you'll just have to get another sim card set up first.

John-306 thanks for that info. I'm staying with my orange PAYG so maybe my wife can transfer her credit to me. We are in the process of getting some of the free O2 sims so we can use those as our 'spare'. I'd best make sure she gets onto Orange pretty quick and then we can get her new phone.

    Cheers

gizmoleeds- I have ported my number across a number of various networks without any probems of 'confused' network providers, but they were all contract. Did your point refer only to PAYG porters?

Mobile networks will consider it to be a different network. In other words anyone calling from an Orange phone is then considered to be calling your wife cross-network as its now on o2. It's only landlane providers that will charge the normal rate for ringing the original network that simcard was on so anyone ringing from a landline will always be charged as if they called Orange as its the original network (unless it's been ported before).

As for transferring credit, I'd buy a new simcard (or use an existing one) then use the excuse that your wife is getting funny phone calls and she is now going to use this new number. Say you don't want to bother getting the police involved as its not worth the hassle as she is changing number and ask them can they kindly transfer the credit.

I did this with o2 when I moved from one simcard to another and they agreed otherwise they may say no as generally credit is not transferrable unless a fee is involved.

Won't they wonder why she wants to port her number if she's getting dodgy calls on it???
  • I've also got a porting question...

I am transferring from one Three contract to another, also with Three

However I want to keep my number.

I have got a PAC Code from Three and understand I need to transfer out to another network, and then back into Three.

Which other network should I use?

I have accumulated PAYG sims for Virgin. Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange - however none have any credit (unless any come with credit supplied!)

Do I therefore need to put credit onto the PAYG card first - to get it working - and then PAC in ... and after a couple of days ... PAC out?

Which is the best PAYG network to use for this ???
