Yes in a skinless boneless breast kind of way, and the purest (expensivest unfortunately) steak kind of way. I don't recall being brought up like it but at some point I've developed a gag reflex at anything with marks, skin, bone, gristle or anything other than pure pretty meat. I'm a bit miffed at myself to be honest, and I'm trying to work my way into eating cheaper cuts but struggling! I cooked pork shoulder once which I hated, lamb (don't know why as I actually just don't like lamb, the smell or taste never mind the cut) and brisket (which we all actually loved!). Chicken is the next on my list as the cost of chicken breast for the four of us a couple of times a week is just silly.
Do you mind cutting raw chicken up? You can currently get four decent sized Tesco chickens for £12 which gives you 8 chicken breasts, 8 thighs, 8 drumsticks, 8 wings to oven roast in BBQ sauce and several panfuls of chicken stock. It's by far the most economical way to buy chicken and the actual cutting up of the chicken is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. (And buy a pair of meat shears.)Val.0 -
Interesting that you are slowing going off meat/poultry, I can't digest meat at all, but chicken was last to for me too, quorn's great isn't it? and there is always a sub for anything in the range ... my son swore he would never eat any substitutes, he and some friends had a dinner I cooked and said how good the chicken was, bet you can guess what they ate lolBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

Personally I think cooking in a bag with the skin on would result in a fatty slimey mess. If you are going to leave the skin on it needs to be crisped. The other thing is the thigh meat is more glutinous and can take longer to cook.
Ideal in a casserole/slow cooker then.
Btw, thigh meat in a broth is supposed to have health benefits. :beer:0 -
I'm really squeamish about fat/gristle/bones too (I know it's pathetic:o) thighs really are so much better than breast in a casserole especially, though I still prefer skinless and boneless I can manage with them. Whole chickens are a step too far for me though - sorry Old Stylers:o:o
DD2 on the other hand on the other hand, is, to me, a little feral - she's always loved gnawing meat off the bone since she was tiny!
But Quorn chicken style pieces are great, I like them in a curry, also had them in enchilladas the other day. Even uber-suspicious DS wolfed down his Quorn "chicken" curry! Best deal I've found is Farmfoods, £3 for 2x300g bags.0 -
I buy a big bag of Sainsbury's basics frozen chicken portions (mega awesome mse value!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) & debone the thighrs for curry ect,or roast one for dinner, the drummers I dust in seasoned flour & deep fry.
As for the cook in the bag things, the Maggi ones are good, the Colemans ones are rubbish & have no taste!AND the skin doesn't crisp up!0 -
ohhhh Lordy - I hate it when OSers talk about portions! OH and I come across as sooooo greedy! to me, 4 chicken thighs is a good adult portion (after all there is bu99er all on them) and two for a child!
No, neither of us is overwieght!0 -
I havent bought a chicken breast in about 3 years, always use thighs and drumsticks in their place. I just cut the meat off the bone and cook as the recipe says.
I find that breasts get very dry and dont have much taste and are hugely expensive compared to thighs/drumsticks.0 -
I have just eaten a delicious meal of chicken goulash (purists please forgive me!) which I cooked in the slow cooker with 8 thighs and loads of veg and paprika, a slurp of leftover butternut squash soup. You are now getting the idea. We ate one portion for two and bagged up another four, which will be wonderful with dumplings and veg on other cold nights like tonight.
My big tip with chicken thights is to enrol OH to skin and bone them. It works every time!Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

I buy frozen chicken breasts and they are actually cheaper than fresh boneless (and skinless) chicken thighs (from Asda), even the whole chicken I bought in M&S was cheaper!
My ovens not working at the mo, so I fry the (boneless) thighs with seasoning but when my oven worked I bought thighs (and drumsticks) and just roasted them the bones are easy to deal with in thighs anyway!
As for a portion I'd say 2 for an adult, possibly less in a casserole. But I would happily eat as many of them as I could, fresh out of the oven!A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0
