Jen - your a single parent right? are you able to help me work out what my sister is entitled too? yesterday she split up with her OH, they owned a house together but now my sister is looking to move out into a rented house. They will be selling the house as soon as my sister has found somewhere for her and my little 18 month old niece. Its all very sad they have split up, so i'm trying to do all i can and work out if she's entitled to any benefits. She works part time and earns £900 a month, gets the usual tax credits and child benefit already, but are these likely to rise now she's going to be a single parent at 20 years old. She spoke to the housing benefit people today and i think she said they will give her £100 a week towards the rent, but is there anything else i'm missing she could be claiming? she will get CSA from her partner once thats all been sorted out. My family are rubbish at working out benefits, no idea where to start.

If anybody else can help as well it would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks guys xx

looks like you have covered it all to me. apparently i am not entitles to housing and council tax benifit on £500 a month!! i have argued and argued but they are having none of it.
might be worth looking at the entitledtoo website google it i can;t rememeber the web address. also council tax do a single person deduction as the only adult she should get a discount. sorry to hear they have split any more questions please feel free to ask!

Thanks Jen. My sister lives in Kent, so maybe its different there? I can't believe your not entitled to housing or council benefit? my mum and i were surprised when she said the housing people said they would give her £500 a month housing benefit, that seems a lot when she works too.
Its all a bit of a shock them splitting up as my sister is only 20 and my niece is only 18 months, but she's said she's happy about it, so is her OH. They've been together 4 years, and only owned their flat 1 year. She doesn't want to move and come live with us because we are moving to Kent in a few months anyway. Arrgghh, don't you just love family problems lol.

Thanks for your help Jen. If you can think of anything else that would be great. I have just been on the entitled site but its having server issues at the mo.

    Morning All

Boooo im back at work... :o

Hayley - sorry to hear about your sister. My sister split from her husband nearly 2 years ago now and has had very little help from the Council. They DO pay for most of her rent and her council tax, but the only income she has is her benefits and CSA money from ex.

She worked it out that at the moment its not worth working as she would be worse off money wise (after child care etc.).

Deffo worth checking out that info on the website Jen suggested, and also get everything from the council in writing, verbally means !!!!!! all to them.

Morning everyone, well done on passing your exams Jen (sorry, didn't see that yesterday).

I'm SO excited today. I was looking at my old college's website and ogling at the courses I want to do but can't afford at the moment when I read the whole booklet and noticed that they will waive your course fees if you get certain benefits. One of those is jobseekers allowence which means I actually qualify :D. In light of that I've emailed off the application form and am keeping my fingers crossed that they will let me do the course I want to. It's AS human biology, I absolutely loved biology when I was at school and think human biology would be really interesting to do. I couldn't find a date for the application process closing but the course starts in six weeks so I'm hoping I haven't applied too late. I haven't been this happy in ages lol.
