Problem with AOL

Sorry if this is a repeated question, but is anyone else having problems connecting with AOL? Slow speeds, not able to connect at times. Rang and spoke with customer services, who helpfully stated that it's as a result of strain on the server. Has been particularly slow in the last 2 weeks, time for Virgin 3 for £30!

i had the exact same probs with aol ,ive been with aol for the past 5 yrs, it was really slow in the end ,ive now moved to sky i get a fast stable connection.
  • I have been having terrible problems with AOL. Keep getting disconnected. They tell me that they now monitor connections and if there hasn't been any apparent 'usage' for a while then you are automatically disconnected. It is driving me to distraction. I am going to ask for my MAC code and dump them.
All I need to do is decide who to go with.............a lot of the better offers are not available in my area so my choice is a little limited.

I ahve been with AOL for 8 years. No problems really, until 2 weeks ago. I get disconnected every few minutes. I have called them loads, and each time I am told to click on a different thing and 'it will work again'. In the last call, I was told that 2 weeks ago, they 'migrated the lines with Talk Talk'. I guess that is what is the problem! They just keep telling me to disconnect modem everytime it disconnects, and the problem will be resolved!!!! Obviously not, because I am still getting disconnected. Has anyone got any ideas? I am tied into a contract for another 12 months (I got them to reduce my monthly fee a few months ago).
  • Found an interesting thread on a different forum. Some AOL customers were migrated to the Car Phone Warehouse servers a few weeks ago. Would appear that a lot of people have suffered speed drops & disconnection with AOL after migration. Nice little test that will show you if you are on the CPW servers:
    www.speedtest.net

Will also carryout a speed test for your connection. If you can logon in the first place:confused:

I've run the test that you've linked to several times, but I can't see where it tells you which servers you are on...am I missing something?? :)

If you are still on AOL's American servers it will show as AOL on the speedtest result, or as Opal Telecom if you have been transfered to the CPW servers.

My connection was transferred back in March, it takes about 3 weeks after the transfer for things to settle down, my speed is now fairly constant and stable, give it time and it will probably be OK

At the end of the speed test, under the result it will tell you which ISP you are with. Mine showed "Carphone Warehouse"

Thanks for that! Mine says America Online so I guess this is good?

The results were download; 1905 and upload; 229. Since I know nowt about 'puters and all things internetty, are these figures good bad or indifferent? they seem pretty bad to me or is that just me! :)

depends how far from the exchange you are, the download is about 2meg, the upload looks a bit low for IPstream, I can't remember the upload of the fixed 2 meg product, maybe you are on that and it's right? (You wouldn't be the first).
As to going to VM, If VM and AOL were both on fire, I'd delay my toilet break, but I'm fussy about the quality, reliability and usefulness of my connection, to the extent that I'll pay more than most to ensure I get a good one.
just doing the quick maths (probably wrong) I pay £16 to sky, £20 to my ISP and £12 to BT, so £48/month, that's a lot more than you, but I'm happy!

Thanks for the post - you maybe right! In the last few days the connection seems to have improved so much :T
