Am i being Spied On?

Hello Everyone

OK heres the problem, about a week ago i was on a forum reading posts etc and i came across another member of the forum whose name was 'User Name'.

Now heres the thing. from then on, whenever i connect or disconnect from the internet, my event viewer shows this...

"The user User Name successfully established a connection to The Internet (1) using the device IRDA8-1."

Please help me this seems really really dodgy to me and it shows disconnect everytime i disconnect. I use AOL to connect and a modem nothing is wireless and i dont have any Infra Red devices around here.

Please Help

Thank You

Its an Open Infared Port, have you got the latest updates as apparently
its a Microsoft problem, Check for Updates.
  • The FBI have been known to use IRDA8-1 for covert ops. Nothing to worry about - of course, if you've done something wrong, they're onto you.

    Hello Mr Skint

Thanks for the reply but i would like to know whether you are absolutely positively sure that this is just a Microsoft Thing and nothing else.

BTW - Ive seen that post i was searching a Google answer for aaages but didnt find a solid solution or explanation. This link that you put up hasnt been replied to aswell. Unless theres another link on that page with a solution which i missed.

Hey hes having you on dont worry.

To find out for your self do this, go to https://www.google.co.uk and then do a search, with the criteria of IRDA8-1 and view any of the results.

Sorry, was just trying to be funny. Obviously I have a slightly twisted sense of humour.

OK just to make sure run your antivirus offline if need be take out the physical Internet connection (remove cable)

    First Off

If you aint got antivirus, get this http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 its AVG
antivirus, Download it and install it, and then check for updates, i.e right hand click the AVG icon near your system clock and click, check for updates.

Now to run AVG do this, restart your machine in safe mode, i.e restart yer machine and hit F8 and you will be prompted to start in safe mode. Once done run AVG, Start, All programs, AVG free edition, AVG free edition for windows, Scan Computer.

Then Plug in Internet Cable, Then Restart Machine as normal.

Naah i dont mind the humour just that im at a point where im kinda worried that this so called 'User Name' is trying something on, see, when i did a search for this, one of the symantec sites said theres a program which allows a user to have unauthorized access to an infected computer. maybe my computer is infected but i dont know it just realised my anti virus is old.

and i will admit, that i posted on this forum for a song download (oops) and this 'User Name' was well known on there (maybe admin)..dodgy forum

syamntec site lists program as 'backdoor' something cant remember.

    any way. thanks.

Are you on XP? Try switching off the Infrared Monitor service perhaps?

Otherwise, an updated antivirus, firewall and windows update should do the job :)
