Im not disputing it. Just pointing out that linux doesnt include everything that certain people may require

Certain people I would put in the minority, my experience is that linux today can provide what most people need.

    Interesting question

I would imagine that in time it will go up in size. Im going to keep on eye on it

Mmm its 6.10 MB all today, there seems to be a new update very often, I did a update late this morning and one just now its gone from 6075 to 6077.

id guess that it generally just changes some range ( a bit like changing an ip range) which would mean it stays the same size until completely new nasties are found and programmed in

  • Well, Free McFee from MBNA is a farse - they can't get the link to show up in my account for me to be ble to download and despite several calls don't seem that fussed. Suspect others have had similiar problem and would like to hear from anyone who has actually found the link???

So, it came down to Avast or AVG or Avira. Avira didn't have web browsing or email (can't remember which) protection, so ruled that out. Slightly better reviews for Avast so went with that

I have the same problem in that the link will not show up in my account.

Did you have a current McAfee account before trying to sign up for the free offer?

I use a prog called drive image to make a copy of my hard disc on to an external hard drive monthly.
Restore with 4 clicks if you have any trouble including eg printer files being corrupted. Other progs that do the same include Acronis true image and norton ghost.

    Hello

This is about anti-virus in a way. Went for a job on Gumtree and was emailed with a link to a zipped Application Pack. (On 07/06/2011).

The "ApplicationForm" was an exe (executable file). Ran it but nothing was happening (wouldn't open in word etc). Emailed back to say could not open file and reply email was exactly the same as the first email received.

I HAVE SPYBOT, AVAST AND ZONE ALARM ON MY PC.

Avast did find it and put it in the vault, but even after cleared, was still getting a 3D login request from my banking site asking for all my details (obviously did not fill this in).

It came up again today, and while fiddling with something else (removing taskbar icons) I noticed that this file was still on my computer and running at startup!

If anyone else has this problem, go to Start, Run, MSCONFIG, Start-up tab and untick the box for this file.

    Once this is done, restart, then you will be able to delete the file - found this saved in my temp folder;

    C: Documents and Settings/(your personal folder)/Local/Temporary Internet Files/Temporary Directory 1 for Application Form[1].zip

Just wanted to inform people, as I had repeatedly scanned my computer and computer said was all clear!
  • I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned along side banks giving free AntiVirus software but if you haven't already checked, try your internet service provider. Most good ISP's will offer free or cheap internet security packages which include full antivirus, firewall, antispam etc. Just check their websites (you may need to log in to or create an online account if you don't already have one). Here's a few examples of what's on offer:

O2 - Free Mcafee internet security for a year (worth around £35).

Sky - Free Mcafee internet security for a year (worth around £35).

Plusnet - Free Mcafee on most packages (£2/month on value pack).

BT - Offer free "BT Netprotect Plus" security software on certain packages (or it's £3.49 per month on the most basic package).

Virgin - Virgin Media Security: Total - Free on most broadband packages. (they reckon this is worth around £49.00 but that's their own valuation).

Talk Talk - Offer HOMESAFE. Not sure what features this includes or if it is any good though. Would appreciate some feedback.

These are just a few I know about. Mcafee is a good internet security package which I've used for years with no problems.

The above packages do change quite often so even if you sign up for a free year subscription, check your service provider to see if they've changed their package as you may be able to sign up for another free year. If not then check your bank as they change their security software regularly too. I haven't paid for security software for around 5 years now by switching between my ISP and banks free software.

my god, McAfee is actually one of the worst ones at the moment, not only does it have very low detection rates it also is a massive resource hog, really i wouldnt have McAfee on my system if someone paid me to have it.

much better to get a proper free AV instead of the promotion ones, current ones are Avast and Avira as the better ones or MSE which has generally been seen as good however it had a (singular) bad result in the last round of tests so i am waiting to see the next round of test to see if that was just a blip before i fully recommend it again
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
