Why bother with all these anti - malware programs? Why not just install a free Linux based Operating System (which has only 3 or 4 unresolved threats to it in the wild) on your machine and do a weekly system wide on demand scan with a free Linux based anti malware program (e.g. Avast,AVG, Bitdefender). That should give a reasonable level of protection to Microsoft users whom you e mail.

Because Linux-based Operating Systems are not as easy to use 'out of the box' for most users.
I have dual-boot: Win7/Ubuntu and like both. I did want to become Ubuntu only, but unfortunately, some things in Ubuntu are just too much effort sometimes, especially when I can just boot into Windows and do the same thing with ease. I love that there are very good and free anti-malware programs out there to help me make Windows safer.

Linux constantly udate and improve, but I believe they have a way to go before many users would consider dumping Windows.

Welcome to the forum btw :)

Well, Free McFee from MBNA is a farse - they can't get the link to show up in my account for me to be ble to download and despite several calls don't seem that fussed. Suspect others have had similiar problem and would like to hear from anyone who has actually found the link???

So, it came down to Avast or AVG or Avira. Avira didn't have web browsing or email (can't remember which) protection, so ruled that out. Slightly better reviews for Avast so went with that

Neither is windows if you've never used it before. Linux is different is all.

And many programs require a windows based machine to run (particularly games)

  • Personally I never recommend any free Anti-virus software to any users especially those that do online banking or shopping.

Being an IT professional I have used nearly all of the popular free and paid for Anti-Virus programs and the only one I could recommend is the one I use, Kaspersky.
It's not free, nor is it the cheapest but some things are worth paying for (although some Barclays accounts get a 3 user license key for free every year).

Some people will disagree with me about my choice and attempt to defend theirs but I have found the Kaspersky Internet Security suite to be the best I have ever used.

Also remember that if you have more that 1 PC or have a wireless network all PC's and laptops should have some form of Anti-Virus and firewall. Wireless networks should be secured with at least WPA but WPA2 if possible, with WPA2 AES being the best available at present.
