    version 4 still works
Trouble is that it now pops up message "subscription has expired. Avast is no longer protecting you against new viruses".
It certainly isn't downloading virus updates anymore and I've no real way of checking whether it is working at all.

Been a while since I played about with avast
But why not try uninstalling avast then reinstalling version 4 ~

Thanks closed. Looks as if that might have done the trick. It has accepted the new code. Guess I won't know completely until it does the next auto update.:j

Avast is good but you have to register every year.

Used to use AVG till I got a virus and it wiped my computer. Since then I have found others have had the same problem.
Norton is rubbish and all but the likes of PC world will tell you to keep away from it.
Currently using spyware terminator. Would advise to not bother.

Linux is the way to go. Some good free systems out there.

yes I wish they'd remove AVG from that list (I have asked) a quick forum search will show you wern't the first to have virus problems from trusting the 'wet paper bag' level of protection AVG provides and I doubt will be the last.

...another avoidable dropped ball from MSE

Even AVG is probably better than nothing though (well arguably at least) and MSE covers a huge range of fields.

One thing I find irritating is that they frequently recommend broadband deals just based on price. Luckily that has sort-of worked out recently as O2 seem determined to fill every port available to them with people paying less that it must cost them to provide the service but in the past they were punting Tiscali who were poor even before the abysmal TalkTalk bought them out.

The thing is you can probably find the MSE advice slightly less than optimal on anything where you have a fair bit of knowledge but all of it is a lot better than folks just believing what the advertisers tell them.

    ho hum....

I'd actually reported it again using this thread as an example in another effort to get MSE to change their article... zero chance now that someone has spoken up in AVGs defence that its actually good

I thought everyone had moved on from thinking it was even anywhere near being suitable for being recommended :(

Your continued rants on here regularly stating that "AVG is junk" and "trusting the 'wet paper bag' level of protection AVG provides" are simply your misguided opinion and luckily are ignored by most MSE members.

You can use whatever you want on your machine but continually slagging off various products on here is very immature and unhelpful. There are also a handful of parrots, who seem to think that it makes them look clever if they joint in, making them look equally silly.

The facts are that AVG is by far the most commonly used free antivirus program in the world and it is used by many MSE'ers who are very happy to continue using it without problems.

Take your one man anti AVG crusade elsewhere.
