Where do users who don't use a Windows OS stand with regard to virus protection and "If you're cyber-defrauded and have no up to date anti-virus software, there's a chance banks will argue you're negligible and liable"?

I use a Linux based OS which does have ClamAV installed, but only to check any Windows programs I may download for someone else. Same goes for any anti-malware/spyware software, there isn't any available for Linux.

I do have ufw for firewall protection and rkhunter for rootkit checking.

I'm perfectly happy with avast, and online armour free, with FF plus addons, and sandboxie (free) for web browsing.

I'm actually considering the paid for Sandboxie, as it would be nice to run other programs forced. Anybody else paid for it?
  • Hi,
I've not see any reference to an extremely good free AV product from PANDA anti-virus. do a google for "panda cloudantivirus"

It seems to be a product that is over-looked, or simply just not known about. It's a far better product (in my opinion) than avast or AVG free.

The key thing to remember is that this is an anti-virus product only, if you were going to install this on a home machine I would ensure that you enable Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. Ensure that you keep them updated, and run regular scans of your machine.

Also if you're interested to improve performance of your PC, you should also consider CCLEANER & DEFRAGGLER from Piriform. A google for either of these two will get you to the web-site.
CCLEANER will clear out the old installers and junk from our computer
DEFRAGGLER will perform optimisation of your computer hard-disk

Hope that may be of some to you.

the august update to the on demand tests,

the one thing that i have found interesting is the increase in AVG's detection rate in which it now has a higher detection rate than microsoft security essentials although Avast and Antivir are still top dogs
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Now you mention it there has been a bit of a drop off in the volume of "I have AVG and I have this nasty virus" threads in the last 4 weeks or so..... however its performance over the last year to 18 months was so frankly awful it'll take good few months before it starts regaining my trust.

yes thats always the problem of regaining trust and i wont suddenly be advising people to use it just yet but its a good start for them and very good for people who are still using it,

personally i will stick with advising Avast or Antivir, i think MSE might drop of my recommended list for a little bit based on these results as it is showing both Avast and Antivir with a far higher detection rate than the others so makes others harder to recommend

I've tried Panda, a while back. I had a free 6 month trial, and it was a bit buggy for me then. I also ended up having to re-install my OS when my subscription expired, because of problems after uninstalling.

I have both as sometimes one will pick up malware the other doesn't but if I had to choose I'd go with malwarebytes.

It is important though to update it before you use it. Here's a tutorial that might help.

Another program I should have mentioned is CCleaner. It's a program that you can use to clean your pc's temporary files out after every browsing session or again, once or twice weekly depending on your usage. It's important that you always use the latest version. The program's interface has a "Check for Updates" link. WARNING, don't install the optional Yahoo Toolbar - make sure you uncheck the tick box, not having it won't affect the program's effectiveness.

    Here's a CCleaner Tutorial.

Thanks - I've already got the CCleaner! Must've read about it here somewhere! ;)

If your pc is slow start a new thread with a hijackthis log, physical ram, and commit charge from task manager, performance.

I actually know why my pc is slow (I think) it's because I've installed the rapport software, as I was worried that banks can hold you liable for fraud if you haven't got it - any thoughts, should I remove it - do I have enough cover with MSE & Malwarebytes without it...?

The Defraggler - is this vastly different from normal defragmenting...?
