Miles per gallon?I
Is it time the UK adopted a sensible measure of road fuel use? Fuel is sold by the litre, so arriving at MPG figures involves converting litres to gallons. Why not miles per litre? It would make no sense to adopt the litres per hundred kilometers used on the mainland of Europe as we have not adopted the kilometer yet. Any other suggestions, Pence per mile would obviously be no good as the baseline would change weekly.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

MPG...there are 568ml to a pint and 8 pints to a gallon. There are therefore 4544 (i.e. 4.544 litres) to a gallon, so divide miles driven by litres used, then divide by 4.544 to get MPG. Miles per litre would mean comparing a metric to an imperial measurement, which doesn't sit right with me.#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

But you are mixing Imperial and metric measurements aren't you?
Like your 2 litre car with a 60 litre fuel tank which does 35 miles to the gallon when cruising at 70 miles per hour which have 16 inch alloy wheels with tyres 225mm wide.

my 21 year old volvo estate is currently delivering around 30 mpg......therefore I feel justified in getting in everyone's way.No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0

People still use MPG because litres per 100km doesn't mean anything to anybody!!

But what about miles per litre? Not a difficult concept. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

I prefer to use km/L - which is metric and appears better than L/100 kmHappiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

Whatever way you work it out petrol is nearly £5.00 per gallon. If you need your car for journeys to work it's VERY expensive now." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

I think mpg remains popular because there is a large enough differential between the figures for the frugal and the gas guzzlers. No one uses l/100km because no one cares if your car does 6.3 or 8.8.0
