Just got my 500GB Mediasix hard drive. It is pre-formatted in NTFS so worked straight out the box in Vista. I am impressed with it and googling the code number for the drive that is showing in the hardware tab of properties, shows it is a Seagate and a very good one at that: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=4f5f99f4fa74c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US

The enclosure has a fan which although it is quite, it is audible to me because my Dell PC is near silent. Tried the media card reader as well and it works fine. Casing does get quite hot.

I am using Vista and whenever I try to safely remove the hard drive I get a message saying drive is in use (and no it is not in use). How can I get it to remove before switching it off?

I work in a PC support role and am only using XP but I do get this problem, or a very similar one, occasionally with usb storage devices. Sometimes the message goes away if I wait long enough, other times not. If I'm sure there is no drive activity and all the writing has finished, I just disconnect the device. I've never had a problem doing this, but don't know if it would cause any issues with Vista. If not, then I guess it's just one of those things we put up with.

    Photogenic
Got it up and running in linux with no extra drivers - it went plug and play then I had to mount the HD 1st time through terminal command line and that was it.

Unlike previous hard drives I'm having aproblem my XP PC found new hardware but I still can't see the HDDrive - what do you mean when you say "mount via terminal line"?

Someone please help! It looks a great drive but I can't use it :( I can see the card drives but not the HD?

If I ever get it working thanks to OP and any hints on what I need to do

    Cheers

    Great offer.

Mine worked straight from the box, in both Vista and Unbuntu.

Just plugged in and the computer found it straight away.

    No problems with any noise.

Just done a couple of copies of DVD's and it was perfect.

Thanks very much to the orginal poster, great find.

Been there, done that, now I want to do it cheaper!!
