Supermarket coupon policy

Wow!
I'm confused =P
So these coupons that Supermarkets sent out take money off the bill even if the product has not been scanned through?
I didn't know that!?
How are they losing? They get the money back from the Manufacturer and still have the stock?
What's the whole book thing about?0 -

[Note that I know nothing about law!]
Are they saying (and here we are back to guesswork as we don't really know what they are saying) that when the coupons were tendered, flowerclipper was implying that they were valid and that's the basis on which the cashier took them?
Is "pretending" that a coupon is valid any different to pretending that a dead pig is a fifty pound note?[/quote]
Now I'm confused ! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:Would the pig be in the trolley with the groceries ?0 -
Thank you Jim and Phil for making me laugh out loud - first, since this has happened.0

You've got to make it realistic otherwise they're never going to believe it's a fifty pound note.0 -

The Daily Mail book token is explained in my post number 85 above, but I wouldn't bother as they are not redeemable by Supermarkets, as I explained. Some will accept them but usually because they don't know any better - and if the store does say no they can be quite angry about book token use as it's a dud coupon for them.
And it's not 'coupons that Supermarkets send out' it's manufacturers' money-off coupons we are talking about. Like the sort of coupons you may pick up at a taster/sampling demo stall, or that you might cut out of the paper for £1.50 off Well-kid vitamins and £1 off Grazia (yesterday's Daily Mail), for instance.
Yes they will scan. Yes some stores allow them off any shopping (but ONLY Asda, Tesco and Waitrose) and even then your store might allow only one at a time. Where they are allowed, if they are not store specific and are in-date, it is great!
Coupons that the stores send out are always store-specific and should only be used in the right shop for the purchase of the right product.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Well surely they should update their systems to not allow this?
Or at least have staff trained to notice it?0 -

If I had been involved in deception for a year, it was unwittingly. Wouldn't set out to do anything wrong on purpose - family, friends, pride, all that jazz!
AAAAh the truth is coming out slowly and this shows why the Police and the store have treated you a certain way - they obviously have been monitoring and waiting for you to be caught using the coupon.
You could have told us from the start about the coupon type but you have been quiet as if you had something to hide.
Sounds like you knew the coupon you have been using for a year (!) was/may have been "dodgy"
You'll prob get away with your dodginess but yes you have something to be worried about.
You should be worried because you have committed a Theft Act offence of obtaining property / a pecuniary advantage by deception. The deception was active in the sense the till operator was fooled in thinking the coupon would be valid when it isnt. You need to check the terms of a book coupon to find out if there was deception - if the terms say something like only off this book then you have deceived the till operator and obtained contrary to the Theft Act offences mentioned. Hence Police involvement as it is a crime not simply a civil matter.
I know of a case for RM who put a postie behind bars for stealing AOL cds (yes those free things). He had worked for them for 26 years and had no previous convictions. He got 4 months so he was prob out in 2. This was aggravated as he stole from an employer. In your case you are unlikely to be incarcerated although if they can show you have done this umpteen times and the mag. hates the look of you who knows..0 -

Please credit the rest of us with intelligence as well.
Dont feed the trolls.Keep trying.........................what else is there to do?

Help, can anyone tell me what Sainsburys coupon policy actually is? and do you have it in writing? I've done some research and there is a lot of conflicting info. Basically I've got 3 coupons, the 40p 1% milk voucher, an internet 1 free litre candia (about 77p worth spend at sainsburys or somerfield) and an internet free pack huggies newborn (worth 3.75, spend at sainsburys) and I want to know if I can buy something else instead?
