Followed johng_uk's advice (thanks johng!) and a nice £15 is being deposited into my current account as compensation for lost interest and as a goodwill gesture for inconveniences caused.
The nice chap at the end fo the line was most helpful and also told me that there is a plan to make extra payments for lost interest to those who opened their accounts in good time but were made to wait. But.. the earliest date from which interest would be due would be whatever date your application was processed (or 6 Apr if before) plus the 14 days they say it takes to open an account.

OH and I applied 9th April with the promise "interest paid from date of application". Deposited full £3,600 each.

After seeing on here that Barclays were paying interest from 14th day OH got in touch with the advisor who took our application. He said he would send us a cheque for the "missing" interest (i.e. from date of application to day 14) as he admitted he gave us the wrong information. He said he would send a cheque for £10 each.

Received letter yesterday saying that our ISAs were now open from 9th May.

OH phoned again and said that £10 did not cover the full amount of lost interest. Advisor said it should be about £10.80. OH said "work it out again, you are wrong".

We are now getting a cheque for £20 each.

We live in a very small town and rang the advisor we saw at the branch, not the ISA dept and he has dealt with it for us.

If you ask, you should get. But work out how much to cover the missing interest!
  • I am an existing Barclays customer, applied for this ISA at the beginning of the tax year and had heard nothing. Rang them today and they have declined me an isa account because my barclays current account did not have any money in it when they eventually decided to try to take the cash out.. Seems to me that not only are they VERY SLOW, but their communication is appalling and they are cherry-picking which customers to take.
I have now gone with the Alliance & Liecester, opened the account with no bother at all..

    I agree with "deep pockets".

Martin Lewis has considerable clout, and should now use it.

All this needs is for Barclays to say that they will backdate interest to the date of application. We're all human, and make mistakes. A simple "come clean", and promise to do the right thing, from Barclays would settle this.

    Meanwhile, we all can:
    1. Make a formal complaint
    2. Keep a detailed diary of all dealings with Barclays, (dates/promises etc.)

Apparently they will back date. (from experience of making the barclays assistant almost cry)

They need to send an cheque (why? no idea) to glasgow then to be processed and sent to liverpool. At liverpool they sort it all out and then the account is confirmed back at glasgow and then confirmed back at your branch or if online then is set up.

Stupid methods, however they will back day interest to when you SIGNED the agreement for the ISA. So hopefully you won't loose out - this offer is because of many problems even when employing liverpool to help.

I hope this makes everything clearer.

They are not going to backdate interest. Many have already said that they have tried and not got very far.

However, some people have complained and complained and got there interest back.

I applied for my ISA on 30th March and still not open

I'm all for money saving, but as a former retail assistant I do take offence at people who nearly make assistants cry - it's unlikely to be the assistant's fault that they can't facilitate changes higher up in the management change; it's the same as someone complaining directly to you because your father's father's father's father's father's father's mother's father's mother's brother's dog's uncle's cat's best-friend's dog once insulted someone.

    start complaining!!!!!!!!

sent e-mail off to barclays complaints dept on 08th may, detailing dates and problems i have had opening a tax haven isa, they promised a reply within 5 "banking" days.
finally received a letter today saying my complaint has been passed to a manager and will get a reply no later than 05th JUNE = more delays, must be due to the volume of complaints, i cant imagine why?

    saw red, enough is enough,
off to my branch timed for the busy friday luchtime to maximise the effectiveness. saw an advisor to vent my wrath on much to his embarressment with loads of people listening in to what a shower barclays are.

RESULT a £10 goodwill gesture, in advance of what i might get from complaints dept. i feel much better having got it off my chest and £10 for a few beers down the pub tonight

    Hi Lokolo

Some of us are getting our interest backdated.

OH and I are getting £20 each because, by the personal banker's own admission, he misinformed us when he quoted interest would be paid from date of application because he and his colleage misunderstood the situation themselves.

This £20 covers the £3,600 we each deposited on 9th April to the date Barclays opened our ISAs on 9th May.

We didn't have to complain and complain. One phone call to discuss the situation with the personal banker when we heard they would only pay interest from day 14. He looked into it and rang back the next day to say that as he misinformed us our interest would be backdated to date of application. Second phone call to tell him that his original estimate of £10 was wrong and he increased it to £20 which covers it for the month.

We haven't had any dealings with the ISA dept but merely got in touch with the guy who interviewed us in branch as he gave us his business card.

It’s taken 37 days to open my ISA. I got a letter last month telling me that interest would not be back dated.
