I cant really see the point in getting rid of wasps nests unless they are a threat to you, ive had one in the gable end of our bungalow since April they keep going in and out and dont come indoors or bother us....................they are actually good in gardens by eating aphids and insects that are pests to gardeners, so they do have their uses in life......................thats my opinion and reasons not to kill........

You probably have a nest nearby - maybe in the loft or even in the chimney itself. They are still very much alive but are starting to get dopey with the rotten fruit thats around and the cold.

If the nest is in the house (IE loft) then they look for somewhere nice and warm - under loft insulation is perfect for them :(

Have a look at your roofline and around the house outside - if there is a nest then it should be obvious as they tend to use one place to get into the nest (unless blocked)

Thanks. I'll have a look from outside. There is no way I can inspect the loft though - it's not boarded or lit.
Is the queen likely to hibernate in the loft then, or fly off?

there is a chance they can hibernate in the loft and setup a new nest. This is what happening with us, hopfully catching the nests early in the year will reduce the risk. Our loft has had 4 nests, 3 in the same area above our bedroom.

No need to go into the loft (I would also advise against it for the moment because if there is a nest then they will be flying around all over the place - not nice to be up there with loads of drunk angry wasps!) to inspect, just take a look outside and if there is a nest you should see them fly in and out if there is one.

Over the past 4-5 weeks, have had 3 large wasps in a bedroom, including one on the pillow! Can't see any visible signs of entry but I'm concerned as they've all been in the same room.. Any advice gratefully received - especially as I'm terrified of wasps!

Try your house insurance you maybe covered to have them removed if you have a nest somewhere.

You haven't opened any windows during the past 4-5 weeks??? Even just when opening your door, one could easily sneak in. I'm allergic so I understand your terror! The ones that do stray into my place end up in the vacuum (along with the spiders) :p

Nest would be dying by this time of year anyway, the queens will be off to find somewhere to hibernate and they don't reuse old nests

Thanks. No - haven't opened windows as I'm paranoid something will come in.. To my untrained eye they look big enough to be queens (about an inch long?) -just odd that all 3 have been in the bedroom. Can't hear any buzzing and all 3 have been 'dopey' - not buzzing around madly. Not sure what to do........

Dont worry about them - its far too late in the year. The only wasp that survives the winter is the queen who overwinters either in the nest or in a special small spherical hibernation cell which she builds. You won't get three together AFAIK.

She will not come use the same nest next year but go elsewhere and build a new one.

    Cheers

They're never very lively this time of year but on the other hand they are incredibly nosey and very good at exploring every nook and cranny and getting in. Can you have a look in the attic (or send someone!) though you'd probably have noticed months ago if you had a nest in there.
