Hyper Dog....HELP!!

Hey all,
Could really do with some help. Will start at the beginning.....
A couple of weeks ago my dog Holly, went off her food. So we thought we would try Bakers (BIGGEST mistake EVER!!) about 2 days later she went hyper, and i mean hyper. Running up and down the stairs, running in circles, not being able to sit still, ignoring us....basically going crazy. She was panting like anything and looked so sorry for herself. So we stopped the food straight away and put her back onto her normal calm food.
She was fine for weeks, until last night, it started again, she wouldnt calm down and basically was doing the same thing again and again. She was also breathing really short and quickly.
She hasnt eaten anything as far as i am aware, and this morning she looks like she has got a hangover. She wasnt her normal self.
I dont have a clue what started it. Do you think it's worth going to the Vets? or see how she is when i get home? just dont like seeing her like that.
Thanks all x

What food have you given her since you stopped the Bakers?
It's well know that Bakers is junk-food for dogs, with all the bright colours and additives liable to make dogs hyper. It might be the same with the new food you've moved to, just taken a while to build up.
Having said all that, if you are in anyway concerned about your dogs health, I'd give your vet a call."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
I cant remember what the food is called, it's combined food with no colours. Just boring and brown lol!!
I might give them a ring and see, for all i know she has probably eaten some chocolate or something sugary.....!!
I just hate seeing her like that x:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0 -
Try checking the protein levels on the new food - for a hyper dog who has passed the puppy (growing) stage, it's best to aim for one that's under 20% We use either Chappie complete (very low protein) or Burns for our hyper dog, and it really helps. Also steering clear of those generic coloured dog chews (the ones that come in reds and blues and yellows, and are generally in massive multipacks) can help with hyperactivity, as they're often culprits.
Definitely ring the vet though, just in case. They'll advise you whether or not she needs a check up - which she possibly will. Best of luck."outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read" - Groucho Marx0 -
Thanks all.
I have booked Holly into the Vet for a check up tomorrow. So we will see how it goes. I will let you know.
I did give her a few chews when i walk her to tempt her back so that might be why. Can anyone recomend any other treats?
I am pretty sure the main food is fine.

are you sure these episodes dont coincide with when she has been outside? could she be eating something in the garden? or on the walks? a plant? my dog ate berries once off a red berry bush and he was sick as a.....er...dog! He was hung over for days.0

Last nights one did. She ran off and wouldnt come back for 20 minutes she went in some hedges. It's a good possibility that as we couldnt get to her....but how do i stop her going in them lol!!
She cut her tongue on them a few weeks ago and was bleeding so i'm trying to keep her away from them but last night she managed to get in them.:j MOVING TO AUS 12th JULY 2009 WOOHOO :j0 -

Try plain biscuits from Tesco
Like the equivalent of bonios. My dogs treats are carrot (yes really... chop into treat size and she'll munch away!) and plain treats like the little bones. I also buy a box of the bigger ones for her as a treat when I leave in the morning or during the day if working from home.
They seem to be fine - it's mainly the BRIGHT colours you need to look out for. Also roasted bones seem to be fine if you don't mind a little mess - pets at home are good for these.
As for keeping her out of the bushes... basically the bushes are more interesting than you... you need to change thatTry cheese cubes or even tinned sausages for a little while and make her aware you have them at least a few hundred yards before she normally legs it, keep doing recalls and rewarding her. Use a clicker if you feel confident with it
