  • MSE Checkerman, thanks for that. Perhaps it should also be pointed out somewhere on the callchecker that if phoning at evenings/weekends then something like Just Dial may be significantly cheaper, as your call is charged at UK local rates - if you are on a tariff which allows local rate calls of up to an hour for 5p/5.5p this means you could make a 1 hour international call for 5p!

Non Geographical Access 0844/0845/0870/0871 numbers are not included in any Landline providers free minutes. There is no such thing as local or national rate they were abolished on 1/7/2004.The main reason that https://www.saynoto0870.com exists is because such calls are not included in inclusive minutes, and are dearer to call then a normal rate when you have to use them.

Have you considered 1899.As far as i am aware Bulldog users can benefit from https://www.call1899.co.uk cheap national, mobile,& intl calls.By using the freephone 0808 access number. This will also also give you a full itemised online invoice.

https://www.Justdial.com are misleading people by calling 0870 access National Rate. They probaly commit an offence under Part 3 of the Consumer Protection Act 1987 by doing so.Also as they dont tell you the actual cost of the call against the 0870 numbers, they are probaly in breach of the new ASA guidelines, that require you to do so.

Well you can't email them so I filled in their contact us form page. I'll post a reply (if any) I get.
  • 0870 calls from a landline cost approx 7.50p peak and 3.75p offpeak. There are a lot of cheaper suppliers then Justdial shown in the MSE call checker, and https://www.niftylist.co, so i see no point in useing Justdial from a landline anyway.Where you can dial 0870 numbers from your inclusive minutes on a mobile(Some O2 Contracts allow) then thats a different kettle of fish.

Thanks for the info. The reason I was under the impression that 1 hour international calls could be made for 5.5p is that the only bill I have from Bulldog is their first one (from June) when my total call costs were 72p + 12p vat =84p and during that time the only calls I made were 1 or 2 UK calls and 1 call to South Africa with just dial which lasted for more than an hour (probably an hour and a half?) via 0870 794 0000.

    According to their tariffs:
    http://www.bulldogbroadband.com/residential/XPNP/NP/tariffs.asp
    Bulldog Inter@ctive Evening 6pm - 8am:
5.5p total cost for up to an hour, per call, extra minutes over 1 hour charged at 1p per minute, extra minutes over 1 hour charged at 1p per minute.
(so I assumed that this is what I would be charged when using Just Dial and the bill seems to [sort of] confirm this or at least that I paid less than 1p per minute in total for the overseas call)?

If you use the link provided by you,and go to NGN charging you will see what Bulldog charge a minute to call 0870 numbers.(7.51p peak,
    3.75p evenings,&1.50p weekends.)
You will also see the evening and weekend tariff you refer to ( 5.5 p a call)only applies to 01/02 geographical numbers.
Did they not supply you with an itemised bill to enable you to break the charges down?

  • Ah right you are.

Even more reason for me to go back to BT as Bulldog block access to most of the cheap provider access 0844 numbers listed on the callchecker. :(

eg: Telestunt; DialAround; Ratebuster - doesn't connect when I dial them and according to an answer to a post I made on here this is because Bulldog block them so you are forced to use them [Bulldog] instead! :(

Will look at the http://www.call1899.co.uk/ link (0808 freephone #) you provided, thanks.

They did not provide an itemised breakdown of call charges- you are suppossed to be able to access this online but it just gives an error message and you cannot access anything. :(

  • The other reason that it might not connect is Bulldog are very slow at allowing newer batches of NGN codes to be accessed. You should be ok with the 1899 0808 access number, but give it a try first, and see if you get through to a recorded announcement.Let us know how you get on i would be interested to know if it works.

  • Have registered with 1899 - will let you know if it works when I next make an international call. Cheers.

  • call1899 is 4p a minute, [£1.50 would get me approx 38 minutes], so I decided to use top up now - http://www.topupnow.co.uk/index2.php as it is £1.50 to top up but the call was 0p a minute (freephone number) - worked well, good clear line, talked to my sister (in South Africa) for nearly 2 hours for 5p! (as I assume I still have £1.45 credit). :)

  • I assume you are talking about calling South Africa at 4p a minute from 1899.
You would also have to add the connection charge of 3p.

I have heard that Top Up Now is excellent value for money at mo.Dont forget there is a connection charge of 5p a call.
