www.dialwise.co.uk New Numbers.Beware.

https://www.dialwise.co.uk have acquired a 07744 no 07744 42 42 300.They have allocated a lot of destinations to it and claim the calls are free. Its only when you look at it carefully at bottom of tariff list, they say its free from your mobile networks cross network inclusive minutes,if your provider allows it. (The only network that allows access to these numbers for sure is O2 on some of there contracts).Beware whatever you do dont ring it from a landline it will cost you an arm and a leg.

Yes a very misleading site, although it does say it @ the bottom, hardly stands out does it! well we all must read the small print i suppose but can see a few people falling for it. Why cant companies be upfront with the charges by that i mean make it obviously clear what the charges are instead of tucking away the text in some obscure place.

as i posted on mobile forum too:

This is nuts!! & cannot be very legal
Calls from landlines to 07744... (which is what it's supposed to give & says on their website) are not free but rather they'll be very expensive indeed!!

can't someone report these people somewhere!
i fear anyone seeing this will be misled unless i'm mistaken myself
  • The Intl Call checker Has picked these changes up and is suggesting calls to these countries are free using this 07744 number. Can someone do something about it as it is misleading to people not in the know and untrue.

    agreed!
very wrong of the callchecker not to check calls.....& rates before promoting them [which is in essence what it does by default]

i made the mistake, months ago, of using the S-F number from my BT home line & was clobbered with enormous charge for just 3/4 calls [about 60 minutes duration = £20'ish - if i remember]

if lots of unsuspecting folk just use it without thinking - because recommended on MSE call checker - them MSE becomes party to this rip-off.

It is definitely misleading because the top of the page reads:-
Use our cheap access numbers to call at the lowest rates to all major international destinations. No need for registration or special subscriptions. Works from any UK phone. Simply pay via your regular (BT) bill...
and at the bottom of the page it reads:-
© 2004/2005. All rights reserved. Rates based on calls from BT land lines
Therefore they clearly indicate on the main home page that the rates they are referring to are when they are made from a BT landline but if you then go and select "United Kingdom [landline]" from their drop-down list, you'll see it then reads that the call is free when dialling their access number: 0774 42 42 300. Obviously this is incorrect and is misleading.

The problem is it doesn't come under the ASA remit and OfCOM are useless which means it's a trading standards investigation. The problem starts because only the trading standards local to the companies head office will deal with it (known as the 'home authority' I think) but we don't know where they are based! Does anyone know (ideally a post code would be perfect)?

If we can get a post code for their head office then I'll make an official complaint with trading standards.

I've just PM'd the mod for the home phones board for advice and whether MSE Martin needs to be made aware of it (if he doesn't already know).

Dialwise is (yet) another company/trading name run by Finarea from Switzerland, like call1899.co.uk and call18866.co.uk. Finarea is the domain name registrant.
  • Dialwise's "Free" prices have been temporarily removed from the CallChecker, as I agree that they're misleading.

Oh.. and by the way - three new providers have been added tonight - Phonebird, Topupnow and Tele88.

    Thanks,

  • Thank you to MSE Checkerman for changing the Call Checker and thank you to the users who pointed this out to me so I could let him know icon7.gif
  • MSE Checkerman, thanks for that. Perhaps it should also be pointed out somewhere on the callchecker that if phoning at evenings/weekends then something like Just Dial may be significantly cheaper, as your call is charged at UK local rates - if you are on a tariff which allows local rate calls of up to an hour for 5p/5.5p this means you could make a 1 hour international call for 5p!

Compared to even the cheapest provider (charging 1p a minute) which would be 60p for that hour (12 times as much). Of course you would need to check that you have a plan which allows this and maybe somebody could confirm if it works? Unfortunately I am still stuck with %&*^$ Bulldog and their 'view your bills/calls online' feature does not work - so I cannot confirm how much my calls cost! :( But Just Dial will always show near the bottom of the list rather than the top (cheapest) as it justs says 'national rate' rather than a price, when it may in fact be the cheapest?

  • Hi Competitionscafe,

I understand your comments, but these call providers can be cheaper to people depending on their situation.

In essence, the CallChecker displays the costs as from a normal BT line, as advertised by the providers. I would hope that if you have a package where you can take advantage of a specific provider (i.e. - cross-network minutes with Dialwise ;)), then you would use that over the others.

The local and national prices are displayed in the results aligned with their normal daytime BT rate.

    Thanks,
    MSE CheckerMan
