Setting up a wireless home network
Comments

Don't worry about the USB side of things - it's not an issue since your PC which is connected via USB is able to access t'internet.
The issue is that ideally you'd want to connect your PC and your AP to the ethernet port on the Surfboard modem but it doesn't have enough ports so I wouldn't worry too much about it. The complication is getting the wireless setup - the wires you already have are fine.0 -
hi guys sorry i had too go do some work(for a change lol, 90mile trip to change a cpu fan )
Mr Warren the problem here is there are a few ways to set this lot up but you will need to state a preference because some will be more work but will allow you to do more things on the network.
Plugging the pc into the ap will mean you have to have the pc switched on to allow access to the internet for ur laptops
My best recommendation here is to either
a obtain a network hub/switch a 5 port one can be bought very cheaply certainly for less than a tenner
b convert the pc to a wireless connection
Using one of those methods will allow you to leave all the addressing schemes on automatic and simply worry about the network keys
Without buying one of those the other alternative is too set all ip addresses manually, assuming the motorola will play ball with the dlink (not guaranteed)click here to achieve nothing!0 -
Mr Warren - Don't read this (You'll only buy one.!)
Surely not.? - from Motorola FAQ's
I have more than one computer. Do I need more than one Motorola SURFboard computer modem?
No, if your computers are connected via a network, one Motorola cable modem will support up to 32 computers. Since each computer must have its own unique IP address - which you can order through your cable provider or ISP - expect to pay a little extra each month for each additional computer you tie in.
Soon Motorola will be offering our newest addition to the SURFboard family, the SBG100 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway. This Gateway will allow you to link multiple PCs throughout your home via Ethernet, USB, wireless and HPNA.
errr WHAT.!!!
Only in America I hope.0 -

lol yeah i read that once but it is not true so no panic, u don't need to pay extra, sfunny but that prompted me to remember a job i went to once where they were using one of those and they do have a new client timeout on them
think its on by default and allows 10mins from what i remember so watch for thatclick here to achieve nothing!0 -

@ mdbarber - Yep, thought so - so much for FAQs then

Mr Warren
Your post #29 mentions a laptop with wireless connection but no internet.
Can you repeat this set up with the AP connected to the Surfboard?
Also with the main PC turned off.
Worth a try.
- its all gone quiet, maybe you've fixed it?:j
PS please stop posting while I'm typing.lol.!!0
