The OP has stated "Now I have a new PC running Vista, a new Access Point "D-Link DWL-7100AP" and I would like to re-instate the wireless connections in the household (printer sharing etc)." so it needs to be configured. Doing your switch this on, wait one minute then switch this on will not work! Once the wireless access point has been configured and WPA encryption set up on all PC's the printer sharing etc. can then be sorted out.

ok ok i missed the word new in front of access point apologies to op, but getting insulting is not helping any one you could have just pointed that out
it appears then that the op will need to standardize the security level on all machines this could be tricky as older kit may not support wpa and needs to consider if security is actually req'd
what i said about limited timespan to allow new clients still stands, what i said about allowing time for the dhcp procedure still stands

It pays to read the thread thoroughly before flaming other posters!

As for you comment regarding security :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Yes I admit, I waffle a bit but that is what people do when they don't understand a subject. The Techie forum is for Geeks like you to help Nerds like me. Geeks use high level language in order to pass as knowledgeable. Nerds like me use low level language (herewith called waffle" because they do not understand the subject. I thought this was a board for helping each other......

Main PC access to web is ok via Ethernet cable to Motorola surfboard supplied by Virgin. When my mate tried to get my PC to talk to D-Link access point in order to set up wireless home network the PC did not want to know anything.
