I asked how much postage would be

I asked whilst the item (4 Videos in cases) was listed how much postage would be.....

The seller replied
THE POSTAGE WILL BE £2 POUNDS FOR THE 4 VHS VIDEOS
Exactly like that.

Now I won them for 1.20 so I naturally assumed 3.20 total. But I have good intuition and I had a feeling it would not be straightforward. (which is why in my other thread this afternoon I was asking should I just pay or ask for a confirmation first. I asked him and said in the box about how he had already told me 2.00 but I just wanted everything to go smoothly blah blah.

I had a reply saying
Subtotal: £1.20
Postage and packaging via Seller's Standard Rate : £3.80

Total: £5.00

I offer the following postage options:
Seller's Standard Rate: £3.80

PAYPAL ONLY

He's not very friendly is he with his Block caps "paypal only" I told him I am planning to pay by paypal.

When I was told 2.00 I thought that was very reasonable for 4 videos.

But he has now upped his postage, and ingnored my message saying he had peviously told me 2 pounds so please confirm 3.20 He is rude if you ask me, he should have addressed the issue of the 2.00 rising to 3.80

What shall I do? pay up because 3.80 is not too expensive for posting 4 videos....is it? Or should I again ask him about the 2.00 pounds postage he previously said.

If I make a fuss he might take my money and not send the goods at all, then I wouldn't get my money back either, because he'd just say he posted it blame Royal Mail.

He offered you a postage rate of £2, I hardly buy on ebay but can't you change the figures when you send the paypal payment? Then add a note to say postage as agreed?

I'm sure someone more experienced will be along soon, but I hope to help :)

If you are happy to pay the £3.80, then it probably isn't worth the hassle.

If you do dispute it further, and the seller is clever enough, then could say that the postage is £2 and the packing is £1.80.

In any case, if you do not receive the goods, the seller would have to prove delivery to stop Paypal siding with you in a chargeback.

£3.80 doesn't sound bad, I think it costs around £1ish to post 1 video, so this amount for 4 is probably right. Seems like they have made a mistake quoting you £2 although it wouldn't hurt for them to reply to your question. Maybe seller didn't like the price the vids went for so is bumping the postage up so he makes a little more out of it? You can either go ahead and pay or send them one last email to see if they reply. Maybe something like this?....

Hi there, Just before I pay with Paypal, could you please confirm what the correct postage is, as when I initially asked you, you told me it would be £2, yet on the invoice I have received from you, it quotes postage as £3.80. I tried to email you earlier with the same question but I don't think you have received it as I haven't heard back from you, so hopefully you will get this and then I will be able to pay as soon as you confirm the price. Kind Regards.......

If you pay by Paypal and he doesn't send them, you can do a chargeback to get your money back. He should send them by trackable means, ie recorded or special delivery, as if he sends them by normal post with no tracking and you do a chargeback, he cannot prove to Paypal he has actually sent the item/s so Paypal would favour you and award you your money back.

    Good Luck! :)

Yeah I thought of that "packaging" get out clause too. What does everyone else think about this?

go to the post office and weigh 4 packed up VHS tapes, it'll cost more than £2 to post 'em, not to mention the packaging materials involved

seems a perfectly honest and reasonable mistake that the seller made to me, just pay for them or dont pay for them, don't be an @rse, the guy is prolly a normal ebayer like most others and is already taking a big loss by selling them at the price you won them for

remember, what goes around comes around

I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

If it helps, one VHS usually weighs a smidge over 250g, so four with packagain (hopefully a good cardboard box) would be almost 1.5kg, maybe more. If its under 1.5kg then you're looking at a £4.63 standard parcel. If somehow the seller manages to get the package under 1kg then its still £3.60.

I understand the reason for being miffed, but VHS tapes aren't the cheapest things to post, apart from i bulk of perhaps 20, 30 or more. :)

edit: 250kgs? damn, that would be amusing!?

  • This reminds me of a bike I bid for and won just before Christmas. I was the only bidder in a week long auction and won it for £10. great I thought.. instructions were "no postage..buyer to collect" . So yes I messaged her asking for directions and a convenient time to pick up whereupon I recieved a full lecture in email saying what a bargain I had and how lucky I was etc etc and she sent me an official receipt for £20 .. yes she offered collection only at £10!
  • Its all well and good saying "its not worth the hassle" or "don't be an @rse" etc but whats the blimming point in asking how much the P+P is before auction end if its incorrect?
Surely the advice above would be appropiate if the buyer DIDN'T ask the P+P price beforehand. Ok so we're only talking about a small amount of money here but its the principle of the whole matter.

It seems you are damned if you do and damned if you don't!

I personally would stick to my guns and send an email along the lines of what shellnsteve suggested in an earlier post.

    Good Luck.
