I've had a Yorkshire BS savings account with passbook - platinum Key share when opened, i think it's Access Saver now, since 1996 with approx £1200 in. Should I keep it in the hope of a windfall, or transfer (probably to YBS internet saver) and close, or keep it open with a lower (how much) amount?

    Thanks :)

AFAIK it is impossible to become a member of RL as you can only invest in the WP fund via a Scottish Life policy which does not confer membership.

There is some concern about this kind of approach (not just followed at RL) among the remaining life mutuals, because it will inevitably cause increasing risks for the existing member/owners as the business expands in future.

We all know how business risk can impact on members of mutuals, you only have to look at what happened at Equitable :( This problem was one of the key reasons that spurred the demutualisation at Standard Life.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Can anyone advise if it is worth keeping the Tesco and Sainsburys saving accounts open for the possibility of any kind of windfall etc.?
    Any advice much appreciated

  • No windfall there.

Tesco & Sainsbury shareholders own the company, not savings account holders.
  • There have been quite a few recent newspaper articles to try to raise the spectre / prospect of windfalls / carpetbagging.

This one in September Money Observer is an example & there are more on the link

Unfortunately I don't believe that anyone has yet to do the research that could point people in the right direction. And even if they did, there would be an element of pot luck about it.
  • I have just decided to close the BNationwide account

I guess it was my long stop, fund if things got desparate but now I can see better opportunities elsewhere

I have nearly done this myself on a few occasions recently but the Portman merger has come quite unexpectedly, which suggests they keep their plans very much to themself, so who knows what is next ?

Nearly also gave up on Portman too, but glad I didn't.
