What resolution do you use?

1024x768 on my 10.4" tablet and the same on my 15" CRT at work. Even though I use a higher resolution, I've designed my own site for a 800x600 screen. The only computer error is a human one.0

I can't help myself .... but ..... I take it, if I view your page/design at any other resolution something's not going to look right - now is that my fault or your fault?0 -
Basically what he wants to know is who uses what I mean is 800x600 obsolete
reason for this is it can be a pain doing a website with that res as on a 800x600
it can be quite a nice site i.e a page filler no blank sides etc etc,
But a page designed in 800x600 can look a little lost on a bigger resolution
its no fault of the designer really its just the way screens have gone.
Lee if I got this wrong let me know, but I think thats wot yer getting at.0 -

Obviously I want my website to be user-friendly towards as many visitors as possible. I would prefer to design my page with a width of 1000 or so pixels so I will be able to space sections out more and hopefully it will look nicer. I agree with you, Mr Skint, my current 800x600 pages look lost under a higher resolution. I have used a javascript similar to the one at pageresource.com, but I'd rather not produce multiple versions of the same page. I'll have a think about the design and see if I can ommit part of the page on lower resolutions.

Isn't there a bit of HTML code you can incorporate that adjusts the page layout, automatically? I may be talking rubbish, but I'm sure I read that somewhere when I was looking at the elements of "good web design". I'll see if I can dig something out ....
Found something .... you need to build fluid or liquid pages. Details hereWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Yeah, it's all about trade-offs. What you gain in one respect, you lose in another. With "liquid" designs, where the content pushes to the width of the browser window, it can suffer in higher resolutions as text lines become and the page may not look so aesthetic.
You can acheive the best of both worlds if you're good with html/css. Ie a container that will push to a maximum of 1200 pixels, but not compress less than 776 pixels."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Why don't you put a counter on your site like the (free?) one at sitemeter.com and it will tell you what resolution your visitors are using. Depending on your host you may already have this information as some hosts provide stats included in your hosting package.
This information should allow you to taylor your site to it's users0 -
I'm back on 1024 now.
But after that horrible experience of having to scroll left and right all of the time, I vow never to forget about those poor people on 800!
