My neighbour sent us round some crumble she had made the other day, she had added chopped nuts to the oaty top...it was very nice.0

I'm not keen on getting the mixture in my nails either so I make a large amount of the topping and freeze it. Just one unpleasant interlude and lots of instant crumbles as a result!0

You can use a hand mixer to start it off and finish by hand. Might make it a bit easier. The butter needs to be softish for this.0 -
If I wanted to use oats for my apple crumbe topping, would I simply pour themon top and then put in the oven or do I need to do something else. My daughters don't like the topping made with flour/butter so looking for something different.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Delia suggests that instead of ordinary flour you use 4 oz of wholewheat flour and 4 oz of oats or muesli. Plus
3 oz soft brown sugar
3 oz butter
1 level tsp baking powder
I have tried it using oats and it is quite tasty.0 -

I use a pastry blender to rub it in, instead of using hands. Looks a bit like a potato masher but with (not sharp) blades instead.... only cost a few quid for one and works for all pastry, cobbler, crumble etc
