You need to make sure you rub it to bread crumb style, and then if you grab a handful, squeeze it together, it should stick together like a dough, but then when you press it with your thumb, it crumbles again. I use plain flour and caster sugar, but its all in the crumbing I'm told!
Also if you are reheating it in the microwave, it wont be as "crumbly" but 5 mins in the oven sorts that out.

Agree with the almonds and oats tips, I use both with excellent results.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

It's possible, you might want to up it a notch - but only a bit.
When I sprinkle my crumble topping on the (uncooked) fruit, I always compact it down with the back of spoon rather than just leave it sprinkled.
Maybe that's a step you missed? You don't need the oats or crushed nuts stuff...I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

i was always taught 6 ozs plain flour to 3 ozs butter and 2 ozs sugar. I like to use either golden granulated or demerara but honestly white is ok. and NOT to rub it in too finely. and dont add the sugar until the butter rubbed into flour. then tip on top of cooked base and put in hot oven.0

Definitely use plain flour, not SR. And when I do it without adding extras like oats or nuts, I rub the fat and flour until it's becoming a bit like shortbread and "clumping" together in bigger bits. Then put a nice thick layer on top of the fruit. Would agree with tandraig, don't add the sugar too soon. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Hmm, maybe that's where I went wrong, I added the sugar in with the flour and then rubbed the butter in. I'll try it again soon with plain flour and adding the sugar after I've done the rubbing when sainsbo has a bogof on their bags of apples
And I pressed it down to make it more even... I mean, it tastes good so I don't know why I'm moaning!**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Hi carolinosaurus,
I've added your thread to the main crumble thread that has lots of recipes and advice that should help to keep the suggestions together.

Why can't you add the sugar in with the flour before adding the butter?0

I know this will be a really easy answer for you fab people.
I've got a couple of eating apples to use and want to make 2 little apple crumbles in two small dishes that I have ..
These are the ingredients I've got, but can someone tell me how to make it.....
2 apples
Plain flour
Butter
White suger
A few porridge oats.
Can it be done with the above? I don't want to go out and buy anything - in fact I think I have got some tinned pears - could I use them as well.
Thanks as ever to everyone..... :jMortgage FreeSave £5,000 in 2020[CENTER:j0 -
You have just the right ingredients
I love apple crumble as it is so easy and so tasty.
Peel and core the apples, (have a bowl of cold water handy to put them in, to stop them going brown), cut into chunks then put in the water.
Once all the apple is cut up, drain off the water and put the bowl in the microwave (I usually stick a plate ontop to make it quicker) micro on full power for 4-5 mins at a time until the apple feels soft with a fork.
Put the apple into your dishes you want to use, and sprinkle sugar on.
Get your flour and sugar measured out in another bowl. Measure out the butter and add this then make sure your hands aren't too hot, and rub the ingredients together until it resembles breadcrumbs. I've not used oats before so I guess they would be added next?
Finally put this mixture ontop of the apple and cook in the oven (gas mark 5?) until browned. Enjoy!£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit) - £588
