Getting out of BT contract

Options
I've been with BT since January on their option 3 package. I was tempted by the Bt vision deal and 8mb connection. I have only been getting 1.8mb at best which is too slow for BT vision. As I was paying £24.99 per month on a 12 month contract for this I phoned and complained. Amazingly the agreed to waive the remaining 8 months and let me cancell with no penalty! They gave me a MAC number while I waited and I have just signed up to Plusnet on a monthly contract for £14.99 a month. If you're not happy with BT this might be worth a try to get out of the contract?

I did this for a friend of mine who was on BT. He had so many faults and I got him out of his contract. It is definitely worth arguing for.

I think that you are getting very  with this. The up to 8Mb is the speed of your connection (maximum speed) not the amount of data that you use. To check your usage see this thread here.

The BT Speedtest is the only test which tells you the profile of your connection and the actual throughput to the exchange (on a BT line), though it takes a long, long time...
Other tests, such as speedtest.net will show your throughput, but this is potentially significantly different to the BT result (though usually similar).
Be aware (oft repeated ad nauseum) you are not being sold '8 meg' but "up to 8 Meg" for the most part, those pesky laws of physics stop people getting the maximum (7150kbps), changing ISP in a strop won't change that, though if you are with one of the better known carp ISPs it may make a significant difference to throughput

What package are you on? Or how much are you paying every month?

You can see the current inclusive usages are www.bt.com/broadband

What exactly is your problem? Most people would be very pleased to get your results! If "it's all jargon" to you, what are you complaining about then?

Why are you "desperarte to get out the contract" that you have previously agreed to?

lolo, netmeter will show your usage (in mb, multiply buy 1000 to get (roughly) Gb/month. the speedtest you posted is pretty good, you may be able to get a higher profile with a bit of messing about with ringwire, test socket, DMT etc., but as you don't know what i mean you're safe enough leaving things as they are, 5 Meg is better than most achieve.
why are you 'desperate' to leave the contract? as expresso says, nothing looking wrong.
