Just to add - do check the label on the product you like, don't just rely on the article on here for what's in the brand you prefer.
I'm buying some for my OH and looked at the Benadryl he usually buys - but it contains Cetirizine hydrochloride (Orange packet) - the blue packet is the one referred to in the article on here, that contains Acrivastine. So one brand name can contain different ingredients.
Otherwise, a helpful article, thank you.0 -
I find it really diffiult to choose between the different antihistimines
Have always suffered from hayfever now worse as an adult.
I used to take Zirtek but now it does nothing for me.
Periton e.t.c does not work either or does for about 30mins then I just get all my sytoms back again.
Having to take tablets and otrivine (decongestion for colds mainly) but completely gives decongestion satisfaction for a bit. Guess some work/ some don't.
A friend advised he takes the tesco own brand which seams to work for him.
Had a really bad alergy dose today. Got Benadryl so going to try that now.
Fingers crossed it'll give some relief.
Also am so desperate to try anything I bought the llyods pharmacy alergy reliver and air purifier. Should get them tomorrow. Don't want my sunny summer days ruined. Will post If I find the lloyds reliever thingyworks or not.

Tesco own brand Loratadine is 98p compared to Clarityn which was £2.70 (but was on BOGOF).Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0

I use a medinose 3 times a day. Costs £50 off ebay but I save that easily in drug costs. It really does work.
I am no longer a drug addict...... :T0 -
I was in Savers yesterday & saw that they had packs of Cetirizine hydrochloride for 49p. There are 7 tablets in each pack. I think that's a pretty good deal for a high street store - at least it's the cheapest I've seen them anyway & good if you're in a hurry for them.
They also had packs of Loratadine but they were 99p for 7 tablets so not such a good deal.0 -
Opticrom users can save money (not a lot) by switching to Boots Hayfever Relief Eye Drops.
They contain the same active ingredient - Sodium Cromoglicate 2%
I'd be interested to hear of a cheaper generic brand.
Also be aware that in my experience the larger bottles just aren't worth it as you're supposed to dispose of the bottle after 4 weeks, you're not supposed to share eye drops and I don't even use up the smaller bottle in that time. I haven't done the maths to see if the small bottles contain 4 weeks worth of drops when taken 4 times a day though, I'm not always that religious in taking them except at certain times of the year.
Another thing I'd like to know if anyone can help is what's the best alternative that I can use when using soft contact lenses. All I have found so far are "comfort drops" that I got from my optician which I suspect may well just be some kind of saline solution.0 -

My local chemist sells generic Loritadine: 30 tabs for £2.99
It's always worth asking at the independent chemists for the drug by the generic name - you usually save loads.

I've just called that chemist in Nottingham - 0800 121 4589, and ordered 150 generic loratadine tablets - they are full UK spec, 10mg, and are the ones they actually issue for doctor's prescriptions, expiring in 2010.
Cost including postage £5.45.
Fantastic, beats the arizona US web site ($29.99 +$4.00 - roughly £16.99 for 300)!!!
I'm sure someone will come up with a better deal - but this one is good enough for me right now as the snuffle season kicks off!0 -
Benadryl, Clarytyn, Zirtek??....None of these worked for me and only had marginal benefits that would wear off after a couple of hours.
So last year my hayfever got so bad I went to see the doctor. He prescribed me these:
Telfast Fexofenadine Hydrochloride 120mg
The are the Dog's B*ll***s without a shadow of a doubt!! This spring and last summer my hayfever has only been about a tenth of what it used to be!...
So my advice would be is to arrange an appointment with your GP. At about £7 for a prescription of 60 tablets it's money well spent!0
