It's not like you took an apple core back to a grocers and said you'd eaten the apple but it wasn't as nice as it should have been, is it?! There's a problem with the straigteners, simple as. You can get a full refund - they don't know what they're talking about as the rulebook of Boots somehow doesn't override LAW!
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.

The OP has no proof of purchase. I imagine this is the reason for the refusal, as Boots have a big problem with people stealing things and then trying to take them back for a refund. Unfortunately because of this the word of the customer alone will not count as proof anymore x
    Gone ... or have I?

I have to say that I am only two thirds of the way there ... the 'XX' however mine came with an 'L' tagged onto the end unlike your 'S' :D

[EDIT] gawd I hope that 'L' stands for 'large' and not 'limp' :D

With no proof of purchase or date of purchase store policy will win the day sadly. If the goods may be over 12 months old they wouldn't help most likely, and if the goods could have been stolen they wouldn't help!
There are laws of protection for the consumer, policy is one of the few protections for the retailer. As the retail sector takes a hit with the global economy more and more will go bust and those remaining will be less likely to offer refunds and exchanges when 'legally' they don't have to. Good on them for finally looking out for themselves as well as their customers, instead of bending over and taking massive financial losses every year on dodgy refunds and stolen returned items!
If you want a large choice of shops to choose from in the coming years keep your receipts and ask for gift receipts for pressies and hold on to them for a bit.
It is unfortunate that Vicky was left with a substandard gift in this instance and was clearly mishandled by the member of staff. Being opened is no reason to deny consumer rights on electrical items (not like underwear, ear rings etc.), but good on her for putting it down to life experience.
    All the best Vicky.

THanks, Mo! I do understand thinking about it regarding the no receipt issue. I guess the people who try and scam the shops ruin it for the rest of us genine customers! I will be keeping ALL my receipts this Christmas and hope my family do too on presents they get me! hehe.
    Money Saved for a house deposit so far = July 2008 £3331.09, August £4396.40, September £5,048.37 (Target = £9,000 by July 2009) 56% there already!:j

If I have helped you in any way, please thank me! :p

even if you havent got the receipt it is possible to get a replacment or creidt note - see the soga

speak to the manager ofd the store rather than the shop staff who have very minial training.

if you dont want to go back to the store then ring the manufactuer as you are still within the 12 months guarantee and get them to repair/ send a replacement to you.
