Boots: no refund

I got bought a pair of hair straighteners from Boots for Christmas and they didnt work in the way that they didnt get very hot at all (could put your finger on plate!).
I took them back to Boots in January and explained the situation. They said that they couldn't refund them as they had been opened. My response was that how ould I have known they wouldn't work until I opened them! The girl wouldn't budge at all and was very rude; adament that 'they are the rules'. Even when I asked could I maybe get a credit note to get a new pair they refused.
If it is their rules, then it's a catch 22 as you won't know theres a problem until you open them, but if you do they won't refund anyway.

That can't be their rules! If they don't heat up then you're entitled to a replacement or refund.
What the hell use are straighteners that don't get hot??0 -
I know that's what I said! I'm startin to think maybe this sales girl was maybe being less helpful than she should have, and had I have called the manager, I would have gotten a different reply.
Oh well, need to be more assertive in future I think. And thanks for replying to my first ever post, lol.Money Saved for a house deposit so far = July 2008 £3331.09, August £4396.40, September £5,048.37 (Target = £9,000 by July 2009) 56% there already!:j

I bought some hair culrlers recently, and the assistant made a point of saying, hang on to your receipt because that's your guarantee!
Have you still got the box? What brand are they? It is VERY unusual for a manufacturer not to offer at least one year's guarantee? You would need proof of purchase from boots, but I would check the leaflets in the box and speak to someone else at Boots.0 -
I can't remember the brand to be honest as I chucked them as they were useless and the person who bought them for me didn't still have the receipt. Doh! Think I made a mistake there but I just thought if they said thats their rules then I didnt have a cas, but looking back I should have taken it a bit further.
Lessons of growing up i guess, lol.Money Saved for a house deposit so far = July 2008 £3331.09, August £4396.40, September £5,048.37 (Target = £9,000 by July 2009) 56% there already!:j

At the top of this forum is information about the Sale of Goods Act (often referred to on here as SOGA) which applies pretty muc regardless of company policy, and is a statutory right. No company can override the terms of the Sale of Goods Act with their own policy, so it is worth having a read of it so that you understand your rights when in situations like this as it can be horrible to be put on the spot and not know what to say! There are many people working in retail who trust what their employers say without thinking, but that doesn't mean customers should. Power to the people!0

that may have been your problem as they can request proof of purchase0 -
I think I bought a pair of straighteners from Boots myself a couple of years ago.Even with the vouchers i had, they were a waste of money.Compared to the expensive branded ones like hairdressers use,(GHD for example)they were hopeless,I think I used them twice.Has anyone else found this? Could it be that the cheaper ones are all the same?0

Hmm, I bought some for DD a few years ago from Argos - can't remember the brand but it was from one of the big hairdressing names. I think they were fairly pricey, but not ghd expensive. They were useless as the plates warped so the hair just passed through the gap! I bought her some cheapie ones from Tesco and she reckons they are brill! Not learning from my mistake, I bought another of the branded hairdresser names for myself, and they have the warped problem too!
Isn't curly hair coming back?0 -
I bought babyliss straigtners from Boots. The straightners were ok but the on/off switch was on the outside which meant when I was using the straightners I kept inadvertantly switching them off and not realising until they had cooled down. I took them back to Boots with no box and got a refund - the staff were very helpful. I ended up buying the Babyliss Pro 230 Elegance when they were half price (£40) I actually use GHD's everyday but wanted a spare set (without paying GHD price) as there is no way I could leave the house if I couldn't straighten my hair!!:eek:0
