Car buyer wants to check car before buying

BUT..... You would not give a deposit before checking the car over I am sure.
I would certaiinly want to look at it and test drive it before handing over a deposit.
I can tell if something has strange noises and rattle.
I would then give a deposit and get an RAC or private inspection.
Usually (wuith garages) there is an agreement that if the inspection is bad then the desposit is returned.
I have twice had quite bad reports (I'm talking over quite a few years) and both times I've got the deposit back (although not the cost of the report).
The first time it was difficult to get the despit back.
The second time we got it straight away in cash but it clearly irked the salesman to give us cash back (but he honoured the promise).
Both times I don't think we could have spotted the issues ourselves.0 -
I wouldn't give a deposit, the private inspection is alone enough to show genuine interest (as it is being paid for and going to happen), and the seller should have nothing to hide and be happy with an inspection.0

A garage will probably not take a car "off the market" without a deposit.
With a private seller then I guess it's negotiable.
I don't think there is any gurantee that an inspection will happen just because someone says so. People can still mess you about or suffer an "unexpected family death" (classic one that).
Certainly for a garage I feel they would want a deposit (although I am aware this is a private sale).0 -
Without any road tax, or trade plates, as you suggested earlier.
Again, I say why bother asking on here, you have ignored all of the sound advice given.
I'm not as daft as I am cabbage looking..
All sorted, As a precaution I asked them to book the car in for an MOT at his garage as well to avoid the SORN situation - they and I are happy with the car and all is proceeding.
Ignored the advice? 1/ I didnt let it out of my sight, 2/ I made sure it was not driven by them to allow them to rack up traffic offences 3/ I didnt let them have the car without any security 4/ I ensured I could legally drive it on the road to the destination and back.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

Sounds fine to me. Sometimes you have to get on with things to make progress.
Regarding ramps - they are totally rubbish unless bolted to the floor and they're no good for lowered cars or those with front splitters. Not the same thing as a proper lift.Happy chappy0 -

You obviously paid for and had a new MOT carried out to make the SORN situation legal then?:rolleyes:0
