yes,can cycle up to a point [or rather distance!]we are about 10 miles from nearest train station and its a narrow hilly road. the main problem is the traffic, theres not a lot of it, but when it comes its fast [ 60 mile an hr speed limit] its a chicken and egg thing. it would be safe to cycle with no vehicles on the road [ tractors, cars, delivery vans etc] but its taking your life in your hands otherwise, narrow road with hedges, no footpath or anywhere to get out of the way of speeding motorists.
also OH has to drive to work, its 16 miles away and theres no public transport what so ever that direction.

Friend of mine was in a similar position - sold up the disco and bought a powered assist bike. There is a government scheme which can pay upto half I think of the cost if your employer contributes and they get a tax break based on the scheme.

They wear very strong gear (similar to motorcycle helmet) and cycle sensibly.

the envelope way, sb44. Paying cash for groceries etc and no spending at all on things we didn`t need in order to live

I think that is what I may have already started doing Kittie.

I have been using a long envelope, putting the money for food in there and writing on it exactly how much I have spent (and where I have spent it) and putting the receipt in the envelope.

    :)

I remember as a kid, when I got pocket money I used to put it in a little tin and if felt great having my own money in there.

Using the envelope makes me feel like that little kid again!

Makes you appreciate the value of money more.

We've just bought our first caravan, when reading these predictions in the papers my first thought was 'have we made a huge mistake' but then when I have thought about it at least we can just go somewhere locally for a break, maybe 15 miles up the road or something which will cost us the site fees & say £10 in diesel. At least it's still a break.

Friends of our have a static caravan which is 75 miles away so it will be costing them a lot more to get there and back but as you say at least it is a break, somewhere to escape to.

The petrol rises are a real worry for me. I start university in Sept, and i'll need to commute from Kent into London. I was planning on driving but the petrol rises may mean it's cheaper to go by train, but then it the extra time. Time wise i'm not gonna have enough hours in the day as it is. I need to just keep reminding myself it'll be worth it in the end, for myself and my family, but blimey it's a real worry  .

Me too, i start uni in sept and was worrying about the petrol before i read this! I really hope its just scaremongering, would love to pack up and move from this country. Unfortunately its not feasible:o

All I remember from the 70's were the power cuts as I was only a teenager so don't know how my parents coped with food bills etc.

The same way as my Mum did during the war, and afterwards when there was still rationing for a further 9 years .Careful management of both money and food resources. It's quite possible to get by on probably three quarters, if not half of what a lot of people buy these days .I have been shopping from my freezer and cupboards for the past couple of weeks and have still quite a lot of food to get through .I only am buying fresh veg and milk and fruit at the moment
I have noticed that there seems to be less of those trolleyfuls going from Tescos than there used to be ,so perhaps folk are wising up to the fact that the days of chucking food willy-nilly into the trolleys are over .We are hopefully becoming more careful with our buying than we were.
I hope the fuel crisis will be resolved though as for those who depend on their cars to get to work it must be a dreaful worry .I am retired, so I could get a bus if needs be ,although I can't carry much in the way of shopping ,but my DD and I take it in turns to drive one car to the supermarket and save fuel that way .At the moment though my petrol is costing me quite a bit ,as I am in the middle of r/therapy and the only way to get to Maidstone Hospital is by car and I have to go there daily ,a round trip of 30+ miles a day for 23 days
By the time I am finished it will have cost me almost a hundred pounds in petrol, but I can't put a price on my life;)

    Hi JackieO

Can the hospital not provide transport for you? Only asking as my sister is undergoing more chemotherapy at the moment and has just started the treatment that means her going every day ..but they send a car for her and to take her back?
Good luck with the treatment by the way...

This is a sign of the times - 30% more people are using money-off vouchers and coupons in supermarkets, shops, cafes and petrol stations in a bid to beat the credit crunch. With rises in food prices and the cost of living, 1 in 3 people are actively looking out for discount vouchers.

I've always looked out for coupons in magazines, newspapers etc so it's good people are starting to use them more!

I'll add this to our existing thread on how people are coping as prices rise.
