I make a good liver casserole which is a change from liver and onion gravy:
    1. fry onion until soft and add some bacon and fry lightly remove to casserole dish
    2. fry floured liver (I always soak mine in hot water first so it just needs flash frying to brown) remover to dish
    3. stir flour into fat (as in gravy making) then add tin of toms
    4. pour sauce over liver mix adding vegetables like carrots and mushrooms
    5. cook for under an hour at 160, may need to add tom.puree if a bit pink and maybe some water
serve with mash or jackets and perhaps some greens, depending what you've got available.

I highly recommend keeping a pricebook in times like these... to compare and stock up when a deal is good.
    .

Do you know what that is one thing I have never had!

I think I might have to nip out today and buy a small book that I can turn into a price book. I always get to the market and think oh i wonder if thats cheaper in Mr T or not - I will definately be making one.

Also guess what I discovered yesterday - there is a new butcher opening in our town! woohoo! had a bad experience of the old one and he put me off a bit s think i will have a butchers at his prices (pun intended) and then go and see what the meat man on the market is offering - no fear yet though have plenty of meat still to use up - got joint of beef ot use tonight so will get that sorted and stretched first
    Time to find me again

    Bl**dy Hell!

I never meal plan as I always change my mind or can't be bothered cooking what I intended to and end up throwing stuff away.

Blimey, that has got to change.

Today they are predicting unleaded petrol may go up to £2.30 a litre in the near future, that equates to £10.35 (4.5 litres to the gallon) a gallon!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1025495/Dont-panic-buy-petrol-No-10-urges-calm-truckers-strike-looms-unleaded-predicted-soar-230p-litre.html

Food prices are going to go through the flippin' roof as is everything else.

I'm off to make a list of staple foods that I can stock up on.

Luckily our nearest supermarket (Tesco Extra) is only one and a half miles away.

But it looks like a lot of people may have to start thinking about doing monthly shops instead of weekly ones.

The only good thing is the kids will be able to play on the streets again like in the 70's because we won't be able to drive anywhere.

I don't meal plan and maintain a very low grocery budget, but it's possible for me since I work in a shopping centre and can call in the grocery store on a daily basis, picking up anything reduced too. Can't imagine how hard it would be otherwise.

A lot of people don't find meal planning essential, many find it just doesn't work for them. I currently enjoy using local suppliers of meats, fruit and veg, milk etc but the issue for me now is milk delivery is going up hugely (due to the impact of fuel costs) and getting to the local suppliers still means a car journey. I have started going less often, I did used to go weekly but now it's at least fortnightly buying more and freezing it.

My main concern is my partners employment, which is in transport (taxis), he works for a very small firm (as in there is just him and the boss) and things like fuel increases hit them very hard as they do with many other businesses. There has already been a reduction in business recently, likely to do with people tightening the purse strings when it comes to disposable income, which is understandable.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

Well, as we only live a couple of miles from the nearest town I can also go in if I wanted to on a daily basis so consider myself lucky. But..... I would assume everything is going to be increasing as fuel has to be paid to transport it to the shops.
  • well if it gets much higher OH and i will be moving in with my mum and dad and as thats only a mile from where we both work, we'll be walking, since OH works for a large supermarket we'd be making full use of his discount when chipping in to the food supplies too.

i really hope this is just scaremongering tho, i'm really enjoying living with my OH and having the quiet life we currently enjoy.

Some things will increase yes, but food at its reduced stage still tends to get reduced to the same low price here, regardless of what price it starts out at... it either goes down to about 40p or 50p, whether it's a pack of apples, loaf of bread or 500g of lamb mince. The trick is to make the best of the freezer, have a great deal of patience (if apples aren't cheap that day, we don't get them!), and have imagination to make the best use of what arises - deciding on the spot what a reduced whatever will make.

if we are talking about petrol, then whats diesel going to be. im afraid i will no longer be able to afford to drive, so the car will have to go, which is gonna be a sad day, with 3 children.

I'm worried about getting to work - mainly because of the forthcoming fuel strike, but since the local train station isn't too far I can still get in via train (though it takes 40 minutes longer!) but fortunate to live local to a full range of local shops and a supermarket for everything else.

Trips to tesco will cease though, too far to sensibly cycle!

Melie3, hope the school is close and you can walk them!
