  • I've noticed a definite increase in requests for car sharing at work. I live in a rural area with very sketchy public transport and we all rely on our cars. Car sharing can be a little restrictive but well worth the effort.

At the moment though my petrol is costing me quite a bit ,as I am in the middle of r/therapy and the only way to get to Maidstone Hospital is by car and I have to go there daily ,a round trip of 30+ miles a day for 23 days
By the time I am finished it will have cost me almost a hundred pounds in petrol, but I can't put a price on my life;)

I was going to post about the hospital providing transport for out-patient radio/chemotherapy treatment - when I noticed MrsMcawber had beaten me to it. This is exactly what happens in my health authority area OR a minibus-style patient transfer service picks people up and takes them home again. It's worthwhile asking about, JackieO.

Maybe worth your while checking out this link, JackieO - on the right-hand side of the screen:

    Good Luck with your treatment.

Thank you both Mrs Micawber and yourself ,I did ask about transport, and at push I could get it ,but the demand is so high especially for cancer patients, its a very hit or miss thing .The appointments change almost daily from the list you are given ,bearing in mind that there are patients who arrive on stretchers in ambulances .They are brought from all corners of Kent and even Sussex. So the demand is very high. Basically if you can walk, then you are better off than those who are on a stretcher. I have been waiting at different times for my dose of r/therapy and like outher patients have been shunted at times as ambulatory patients go in first .I don't mind that, as I understand that they are far sicker than I am. Plus of course it depends on where you live, and where they can fit you in. There are almost three hundred people a day getting chemo/r/t at this hospital and the local hospital to where I live the Medway Maritime is as present having a huge fund-raiser to try and raise the cash for an oncolgy unit. Badly needed as Maidstone seems to be the only one at the moment in Kent .My Dd's ma-in-law when she needed r/t had to travel from Barnehurst on the outskirts of London daily to St Thomas's in central London for treatment. There is a dreadful shortage of oncology units in the South-East with patients having to travel anything up to 70 miles plus each way for treatment daily .I have 12 days left to go so I am over half-way through. The staff at Maidstone are terrific and do their best with the very limited budget available. Every penny counts ,especially after they had to pay their Chief Executive off last year for her failure to take resposibility for the dreadful 'dirty Hospital scandal'
The Oncology unit is scrupulously scoured almost it seems every hour and I cannot fault them in their treatment .The Government should feel ashamed at how hard they have to work with so little available money. Although transport is expensive for me, I will pay it if it means there is a bit more cash available for people whose need is greater than mine .After all when I walk out to go home after my treatment I am luckier than those poor souls who may never be able to walk again ,and I see them almost daily, and the hope for a cure is in their eyes and on their faces

    Hi Jackie

I think that is a very unselfish attitude you are showing there - talking about those whose need is greater than your own (indisputable) one.

I am sorry to hear you are so ill - and wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.

    love

I third that!! I love reading your posts on the board Jackie O and I hope you do make a quick and speedy recovery too. I love reading your 'olden day' posts about how things were and the way you were raised.

I am still a bit worried about prices, Im trying to get some form of a little stocky cupboard together but its just impossible - literally every month im trying to make sure everything is used up and that the cupboard/fridge/freezer are practically empty before i do a shop so i know im not wasting anything. Im still cooking/baking alot from scratch as I enjoy knowing that Im able to do it if worst comes to worst - like making bread by hand for example - i know i can do this so we wont ever be without bread provided i have the ingredients. My friends husband was laughing at me the other day when i said i make bread by hand he joked i was 'a proper little housewife' - but i think it will be me laughing when im able to provide well for my family on a few measley bits if there is another recession again.

As for petrol - oh my god - my boyfriend has abotu a 20 - 30 minute journey to work each day and the same back - he has a little VW polo that he uses and its literally used for that and collecting his other son on weekends (which is the same way home just a bit of a divert. Boyfriend use to cycle to work - well to the train station, then jump on a train adn then cycle form the other end to hsi work and he was doing that every day - even in winter. Then we got the car and it was much easier but now is so expensive for petrol and we are by no means rich - i think we are possibly under the breadline at the minute and thats with me working 11 hours a week and boyfriend working every imaginable hour he can get monday - saturday bar the days he has hospital. Recently he brought a little motorbike, as he said it would be cheaper for him to run thank a car but we will have to see now.

Have also taken it upon myself to make sure my mum is fed too - she struggles with bills, basically a waste of space boyfriend who doesnt liek meat much who pays nothing and her who pays everything and then he eats everything in the house. I made sure when she came up this week that I had a minor whinge (said how we have lots of meat in the freezer but we wont eat much of it) so my mother left with pack of 5 pork escalopes, 3 chicken breasts, portion of chicken thighs, a plate of sliced up roast beef that i had cooked the previous night, bag of rice, a maltloaf, half a D&DD apple and sultana braid and half my microfibre clothes! least i know shes fed for a while now and by the time it rolls around for her next visit in two weeks time i dare say ill be giving her another bag full.(i tend to get alot of discounted meat/veg/fruit and bread from the coop i work in and to be honest one supervisor can never be bothered to run them through the till so i tend ot get a fair bit fo rfree or 4 bags of rolsl for 10p!)

    ooops super long comment! sorry!
    Time to find me again

EDIT: Phew 500g Marmite is only £3.82 in Sainsburys, panic over.

I buy 4 litre containers of white vinegar from my greengrocer. For £1.85. :j Asian stores usually stock it too, I'm told (but we don't have any here).
