Rechargeable digital camera?

Is there such a thing?

Forgive the doubtless naive question from someone who has not touched a camera for 25 years but I am totally out of touch.

Ideally I want something than can be mains recharged just like a mobile phone.

Can anyone tell me what the options are?

  • I've got 3 digi cams - all 3 have rechargeable lithium batteries that you pop out and into a bespoke charger unit. I've not seen one you can directly charge up like a mobile phone though

Seems weird. Why shouldn't such a thing be available?

Good quality digicams, come with a Li-Ion battery, depending on the brand, you either plug a lead into the camera to charge (like a mobile phone), or pop-out the battery and recharge in a specialise charger, which comes with the camera.

Li-Ion are the best type of batteries as they hold a much higher charge.

Cheaper digicams will have space for AA batteries, so you can use NiMh rechargeable AAs, and charge them as you would any other rechargeable AA battery. Avoid NiCad batteries though, they are old technology.

Have a read of the reviews at www.dpreview.com and www.stevesdigicams.com

I had some older Canon digi-cameras that charged like a mobile phone... The battery was also removable.

No doubt it's cheaper for manufacturers to supply a separate charger, as it saves building in another port and wiring in the camera for "direct charging". It's easy so there isn't really an issue.

  • You'll need to check the specification for a camera to determine this.
Some use a dedicated removable and rechargeable lithium battery. I personally prefer this option. A non original/or original spare can be purchased and charged ready for use A mains charger should be provided.
Others use conventional size AA rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries. You'd need a readily available separate charger for the former.
Some cameras might use AAA size but not sure about that.

Because if you're out in the countryside / on a boat / in a plane etc and just about to take the shot of your life ..... as the battery fails. It's a lot easier popping in a charged spare ...... than finding a 13 amp socket???
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

That makes sense yes... providing all such cameras come with extra batteries you don't have to buy separately...

I have had digital cameras that you can just plug in and others that stand in a charging unit...both made by Sony T series charges in a unit and I had a P series that just had a socket for a charging cable. Best bet is to go to a camera shop and look at all the options.
