Buying for business invalidates guarantee
Comments

IMO I think the person who refused to give you a refund didn't follow Argos policy. My interpretation of Argos' terms is that items are intended for domestic use only, but using them won't invalidate the guarantee and you're still entitled to have a replacement, refund, etc.
I think the main purpose of the clause is so that if you do use them as part of your business and a fault loses your business money then Argos are not liable for any losses.0 -

I don't interpret it that way.
Take, for example, a microwave. A domestic microwave costs anything from £30 upwards and gets a reasonable amount of use in a normal household.
In a catering business a microwave would get very heavy use, constantly being used all day and every day. Commercial microwaves cost upwards of £200. They are built for the heavy and constant use.
So if a domestic microwave was used for business purposes (in a cafe or restaurant) it would get far more use than it was ever intended for, probably something like 10 years worth of use in 1 year, and in those circumstances I don't think the guarantee would cover it.0 -
I could be wrong, but isn't the wording somewhere like "buying in the course of a business"
I.e. OP didn't buy the item for business use - the fact that it has been used on business property is irrelevant - it wasn't used in the for the purposes of the business.
i.e. I buy myself an iPod to use at the gym - I also take it into work with me to listen to at break time and keep the charger at work as it is more convenient. The iPod isn't being used by the business in the course of its activites - it is being used by me!
Just my 2p
MPI have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

"When did Argos staff get to decide what constitutes business use of a product? Is that defined in their T & Cs? And when did Argos get to override the Sale of Goods Act e.g. the seller being legally obliged to address the problem if goods are unfit or poor quality?"
If you read my post properly, you would notice that I had already said that however it came about the OP had given the impression that the item had been used for business purposes, and by their own admission had failed to elucidate, choosing instead to resort to rudeness.
The point I was making was that the member of staff was right to point out this clause to the OP and they were wrong to assume he was a) lying and b) a jobsworth. The matter of whether or not the television was used for business purposes is irrelevant being as the OP then decided not to explain themselves, but to swear at the member of staff and storm out. We don't know what they would actually have done had the OP actually explained the situation more clearly, so the SOGA doesn't really come into it. I think you may have missed the point of my post by focussing on ten words which didn't really sum up what I was saying at all.0 -

If this is directed at me, apologies but I wasn't responding to your post just making a general comment.

No problem - I should have read back before posting anyway.
