Why are you shocked? the majority of people who dont pay the licence do so because they cant afford it, courts generally will favour them and at worst make them pay it off slowly with small payments. Yet the bbc spends massive amounts of money taking them to court, the reason been if the bbc loses 1 court case (gets told the licence fee invalid) it will set a precedent which they dont want.

The licence fee is now very outdated and I feel the bbc have had their last renewal now and wont get another at least not on the same terms.

My understanding was that you may need a licence if the programme your viewing is being aired at the same time if you watch half an hour later you dont but I admit its a while since I last checked it out hence request for link from poster who thought you needed one

This is from the TV licensing site

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.

If you use a digital box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.

Which in my opinion would suggest that you do not need a licence at all for the iPlayer if you watch programmes streamed on it.

I contacted TV Licensing after Dad died last month, just to get everything put into mum's name for when the license is due in June. They wanted death certificates and all sorts, in fact, the local council wanted less than they did.

In the end I told them to forget it, simpler to take out a new license in Mum's name when its all due!

My problem with the TV Tax is that it is like the Poll Tax and does not take account of ability to pay. So a millionaire with mansion full of TVs pays the same as someone on the minimum wage.
Why should everything be means tested? It is probably the biggest waste of money any government has ever come up with. Irrespective of what social class you are in you have a choice on whether or not to own a TV .. if you decide to own one then, in the majority of cases, you should be budgetting a licence into the equation as well .. just like if you own a car you budget tax, insurance and petrol into the equation.

A TV is not a necessity.

Will be interesting when freesat launches, will sky still be able to broadcast the bbc and itv channels? and if not will u still need a licence if u only have sky?
Don't mind the licensing system myself as u have to pay one way or another just hate doing it twice(license+adverts)

Got nothing to do with whether you watch BBC/ITV channels or not. If they're UK based live broadcast TV signals you have to pay a license. So doesn't matter whether signals are terrestrial broadcast, satellite, cable, broadband streaming etc.

Doesn't matter where they are based, if you watch it live, you must have a licence.
