I'm a Barclaycard Platinum customer and I told them I wanted the new cashback card they are offering but they said I can't have another card and that if I cancel, I'd have to wait 6 months before signing up for a new Barclaycard, so I told them to stuff their card, claiming Amex and Egg were offering 5% and 1% respectively. So they offered me 3% for 3 months on the spot. Result!

I love it! You know that the american express call centers are now going to be inundated with 100's of MSEs ringing up trying to pull off this illusive 5% deal!

Its brilliant. This site and those liek it will revolutionise the way that business considers its customers. We cannot now just be thought of as impersonal drones who can be bated by attractive introducotry offers and the like. Sales managers must hate us!!! :D

    Just rang them

Her: "Welcome to Barclaycard, may I ask who I'm speaking to?"
    Me: "Certainly, it's Richard xxxxx"
    Her: "How can I help?"
Me: "Can you tell me how to go about closing the account?"
Her: "May I ask why you would like to close the account?"
Me: "Well as you can see I have quite a high..."
    Her: "Interest Rate"
Me: "No. I have quite a high spend on the card and I'm aware that I can get 5% cash back by opening an American Express Platinum Card"
Her: "OK sir I'll just put you through to our cancellations department..."
    Me: "Thank you"
    Hold Music Plays
Her: "Thank you for waiting Mr xxxxx"
    Me: "That's all right"
Her: "I'm afraid that the cancellations department is busy right now, I will send them an email telling them you wish to close the account, and they may wish to get in contact with you. May I take a contact telephone number?"
Me: "Certainly. Is my mobile ok?"
Her: "Yes, that's fine, may I take the number?"
Me: "Of course. It's 07xx xxx xxxx"
Her: "Is there anything else I can help you with right now?"
Me: "No that's all thank you. Thank you for your time."

Dammit! Will wait and see what they come back with. Will keep you all updated!

    This is the secret message.
  • I have to thank you martin i did call barclays today and threatened to cancel my account. And they offered me 1% cash back on all purchases made on my card. Yeah it's 1% but it's better than nothing i never had it before i read your article and took your advice.
    Thanks again
    R x:money:
  • Sorry meant to say the 1% is for six months.
  • I got Barclaycard about 4 months ago thanks to Martin's recommendations and got £50 worth of John Lewis vouchers, then phoned them to cancel the card and was offered 2% cash back for 6 months.

I just rang and I got 2% for 3months. max you can earn per month is £50.cashback added to your statement at end of each month
  • I just called them to cancel (apparently I've been a customer for 22 years!).

I mentioned that since November I'd been using a Capital One card due to the cashback (I'm a high spender and always clear balance).

CS transferred me to the Cancellation Department.

The best deal they offered was 2% for 3 months which I did feel fairly insulted over given the money I've spent over the years!
Argued that I'd heard amounts up to 5% (to match Amex) but was told this is not available.

    My account now cancelled!

Lol - I just spoke to Barclaycard and got a very firm "no" and a mild ticking off for only using it for the £50 voucher! She said I don't use the card enough to get the cashback - I explained the reason I don't use it because it doesn't offer a cashback deal. Didn't wash!

They must be getting loads of these calls thanks to MSE.

UPDATE: Out of sheer bloody-mindedness I rang again, and spoke to a far more customer savvy lady who offered me 2% for 6 months, so I have grabbed it and will now start using the card!
