Barclaycard Customers: Possible Cashback up to 5%

  • I was cancelling a load of my credit cards in December as I had far too many cards with nothing on them and I called Barclaycard and they were very good.

They instantly offered me 2% cashback for 3 months and also gave me a variable interest rate depending on my level of spend. If I spent more than £250 per month, the interest rate would be 6.9%. Spend up to £25 and the rate was 18.9% and anything between £25 and £250 was charged at 12.9%.

The cashback was capped at £50 per month but as my monthly expenses regularly exceed the threshold required to get the £50 cashback (£2500) it wasn't a problem as it was paid off in full every month.

Now that the cashback period is over, I'm considering calling them again to cancel the card, but I doubt that they will be offering me any incentives to stay this time!

I am after telephoning Barclaycard to cancel my credit card and they said I could have 2% cashback for 3 months capped at £50 a month. I wonder when this comes to an end do I get any cashback?

I wish I had done this this morning because I had to pay for £490 of oil, that would have been £9.80 cashback!!
  • Yeah - the cashback is applied on your monthly statement so effectively if you spend £2500, then your statement will say your outstanding balance is £2450.

If you time it right, you may want to give them a call to 'cancel' and get the subsequent cashback offer right on the date of your billing cycle as that would then give you the whole month to apply the cashback to your spend. If that makes sense.

I had a very easy conversation with B/C - I said "a friend had been offered 2% over 6 months and that I was planning on cancelling so thought I would be cheeky and ask myself."
They offered 3% for 3 months, but I pushed her to 2% over 6 months. She was very polite and easy to talk to.
    Thanks again MSE!

I am just after leaving the phone down to Barclaycard because I had rang them back to request an additional card for my husband on my account. They told me that the advisor had closed the account and then offered me the 2% for 3 months. He said he had made an application for my account to be reactivated and that I needed to telephone back in 48 hours to see if it had been.

Thank you for the advice. I phoned Barclaycard and they offered me 3% cashback which is better than my A&L card so I'm happy.:T

I just called and was honest with the guy. Told him I'd heard on an internet forum that if you threaten to cancel, you could take advantage of a cashback offer. He replied "Was that the Matring Lewis site?"
He told me the cashback offer was not available on the bog standard barclaycard I have, but he's upgraded me to the Barclaycard platinum. It has a standard cashback rate of 0.5% (which is rubbish, I know), but he told me to call back once the card comes through and negotiate a higher rate...
    Will keep you informed...

The account has not been reactivated and they advised me to apply for one of their other cards.

Disgusting, that's loyalty for you. I suspect you paid off your card in full every month.
