also, if anyone has any ideas? my OH seems to deliberately want to sabotage MS/OS etc etc and wants to spend more the less i spend:rolleyes: - on meat (i'm veggie) and also he picks things randomly off the shelf without having made sure it's the best deal etc.

when i then ask him how much something is he has put in the trolley he will even make it up if he doesn't know?!.........

Getting the OH into an MSE/OS way of thinking can be a bit of a battle. They don't seem to quite understand the concept of reducing spending unless they can see a goal at the end of the exercise.

Have you talked to him about how much things like shopping/electricity/gas prices have gone up recently without an equivalent rise in the family income? IF he can understand that you are trying to economise on the shopping so that you can keep your heads above water where bills/holidays/christmas are concerned - then maybe you can turn him around. If they think that you're only doing it to be able to afford a treat for yourself (new lippy, new top, night out) it just won't work but if they think it's for the good of the family (and ultimately their pockets ;)) then they are more likely to be co-operative.

I've finally managed to get my OH into thinking MSE/OS, but he still occasionally goes out shopping alone and comes back with things 'off-list' - but only if it's HIS money and not mine  !

One of my lightbulb moments was realising I was brought up by OSing parents, without realising, guess they did a good job. When I first left home I used to batch cook quite a lot as it was easier when I got home than starting from scratch and cheaper too. I let a number of OS things slip over the years, but with the credit crunch happening last year, I quickly re-discovered many of my old OS habits.
  • my lightbulb moment has been watching Jamie Olivers Ministry of Food program and realising that we ate a lot of frozen pizza, pies and no vegetables when it would be easy to do some cooking from scratch and eat more vegetables so for the last month I have been trying new recipes every time it's my turn to cook and even the OH has made homemade burgers rather than eating frozen ones. He now eats quite a few vegetables he would never have eaten before and said he'd never buy frozen burgers again because his homemade ones were soo much tastier and we knew exactly what went into them.

I'm not keen on 'tomatoey' stuff - especially pizza topping, but I love pizza. So my ideal is a base as garlic bread with the rest of the topping just omitting the tomato bit :D.

Try it with BBQ sauce instead of the tomato sauce.

I do like regular pizza sauce but if I'm having a very rare treat and ordering from Dominos I'll always ask them to substitute the pizza sauce for BBQ sauce as it tastes fab!!

Many thanks for the suggestion, PurpleSkies but I'm afraid BBQ sauce is another of my pet hates :( - along with all things 'smoked' - shudders at the thoughts of frankfurters, kippeers, yellow fish, smokey bacon.

Just call me a pernickity, old stick-in-the-mud :o.

My LBM came when I realised I should always cook a double amount of every meal and things like cakes, then freeze the other.

I always put a post-it note on top of the container with what's inside and the date (otherwise you forget what you've got in there) for use another time.

Re pizza. A quick snack, pizza toast and delicious.
    • Toast one side of bread or bagette
    • Squeeze good helping of tomatoe puree on untoasted side then spread
    • Cut up cheese and put on top of puree
    • Sprinkle liberally with oregano
    • Toast till cheese bubbles
  • Got really into OS, when I gave up work. Always thinking what can I make now.? Yesterday done some chicken croquets, couscous, roasted veg and parsnip chips for tea. Today doing a savoury roll, it cooking in the oven. Its like a big pasty should fill up the family:rotfl: Hubby just rolls his eyes, but appreciates a home cooked meal on return from work. If he's late and we've all eaten, he has a peep in the fridge to see what I've left him to reheat.;) I also try bake stuff for kids packs and keep any desserts simple. Having go ime to faff making exotic cakes. I'd hate to be aken advantage of:D

This is my first post on here but I have been reading avidly for the last couple of weeks!

Having been dealing with things for the last 3 years reading the OS ideas on here has been a full on lightbulb moment. I have been managing to keep going but I know I can be more organised and save money - tried meal planning for 1 week from stuff in the freezer - the family had the list on the kitchen board and picked - can't rush them too quick into this!

My OH has noticed how this site has picked me up, my daily dose of support, ideas and a reminder to turn off the lights!!!!

Mine was a bit like this too, gradual I've been posting and lurking quite a while but I do think you get a moment when its a week after paypay and you've no money left and you think things have to change, that for me was this month so started seriously about two weeks ago meal planning, etc. Hoping to be a bit better off next year and better at managing my money.
Remember ....its not a bargain unless you need it :D
  • I have always been old style but got lazy of late. Lightbulb moment recently when I started cooking ALL meals from scratch again and realised how much money I saved by doing this. I'm old style with a vengeance now.

    It is soo simple! Honestly.

    What you need:

    1 egg yolk
    1 teaspoon mustard
    1 splash of vinegar
oil. Pref. a neutral oil like sunflower. No olive oil.. that tastes ick..

Important thing is: have you ingredients at room temp or it will fail.

So egg yolk, mustard and splash of vinnegar in bowl.

    Whisk

    Add oil slowly
First a wee drop, then whis, then another drop...

keep whisking when it starts to change colour and thicken you can start to pour the oil in faster.

Add as much oil until the mayo has the desired thickness.

    Chuck in anything you like!
Herbs, salt, garlic.. just try it and see if you like it.
