Do you need a fixed public IP address or private IP address?
  • Thanks for this!

This Internet company is going to allow me access to their Database so I can place trade orders. They need me to give them a fixed IP so that their systems can accept me trying to gain access.

I think we have been barking up the right tree

Have you contacted your ISP yet and asked them for a fixed IP? or perhaps change ISP to one that does

  • It is a nightmare trying to contact anyone there with any sense, and without knowing much about it myself... I was hoping I could organise it myself. Is there no other way?

weegie.geek's post 11 covers it well, though, for me, changing to a decent ISP, with good CS, is a more elegant solution.
you still haven't named your ISP, some do give fixed IP as standard

change ISP, I suggest IDnet, you are running a business, you need good service and support, you already know the support you have sucks, pay more, get a fixed IP and good CS, it will be worth it, especially if anything does go wrong with the connection

  • OK but is there another solution?

  • Although if I did join this decent broadband supplier perhaps I could change over to VOIP and with decent uptime and customer service could save a fortune with my calls and not have to worry about the Internet not working and stopping all my business calls?

this is down to your application supplier, and from the sound of it no, he will only allow you to register 1 ip adress to connect from, without the co-operation of the isp this is not possible, un less u can find a proxy to connect thru that does have a fixed ip, but as that would had other security issues its not advised,
