I'm going from stansted to london on (sat) 4th october and back again the next day.

If I use thetrainline website to get a Mountfitchet to london £18 saver return will it be a valid ticket and will i have any problems using it?

thanks for the advice posted here folks, most helpful.

Quite a few coaches go to/from London too. Not just Victoria. Some routes are frequent.

    See stanstedairport.com

This depends on your ticket type - I believe that with day returns or open returns you can do this, but NOT with saver returns.

Whilst there is a prohibition on breaking your journey on the outward portion of a Saver Return, there is no restriction on starting or ending short. The National Conditions of carriage require such a restriction to be stated explicitly.

    FYI AUD=Audley End, SSD=Stansted Airport, LST=Liverpool St

I got to this thread a litle late, something I hope I do not have repeat next week when I land a Stansted Airport. As a twist to the tale if I were to book a cheap day return on route AUD-LST via SSD I cannot board the train at AUD before 10:00 - of course I will be boarding at SSD. The question is can I board the 10:15 at SSD even though no AUD originating service could have got me to the Airport by that time.

Secondly for reasons I cannot fathom there is a very limited return service, of permissible trains, from LST to SSD in the evening - nothing between 19:10 and 23:00 when I try to book using the Cross Country Trains site. Am I correct in assuming that ANY train from LST to SSD is permitted.

Fascinating little experiment for next wednesday :)
  • I don't know if this would be any cheaper but could you get a ticket from Stansted Airport to Stansted Mountfitchet or Bishops Stortford and then a ticket from there to Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, depending whereabouts in London you want to go? If you get a Stansted Express that's stopping at Stansted Mountfitchet or B/S then you would stay on the same train.

The point is that if you get an Audley End to London Terminals Ticket it doesn't matter where the train stops. You just get on at Stansted Airport and then off in London.

Why? The first train an Off-Peak Day Return is valid from Audley End is the 09:10 direct to London, or if you did actually want to go to Stansted Aiport the 09:37 arriving 09:58?

I would say so, as London to Audley End via Stansted Airport is a "Permitted Route", and if you want to catch an earlier train, for example to allow additional time for connections, as the ticket is not "train specific" and there is no time restriction, I can see no reason why you cannot. The reason for the lack of trains showing in the booking system, is that there are no direct trains to Audley End after about 8pm on the "Permitted Route", so it is trying to be helpful and not have you hanging about too long at Stansted Aiport. However, if you do catch an earlier train I wouldn't be surprised if it was queried, but the fact is that it is a permitted route.

Thanks for the reply Altarf, the reason for starting the journey after 10am is that the fare drops to £10 return with NRC, before 10am it's £13.70. I mistakenly assumed that the CDR fare kicked off at 10am so sorry for that. Buying the S-CDR :) Super Cheap Day Return lets me board the 10:10 from AUD I'm still unsure if it will allow me board the 10:15 from SSD but I can try asking the conductor nif need be.

Been there done that :) thanks to Altarf & friend I had a rather smug feeling at 09:50 last wednesday as I passed a queue of people lining up to pay £26 for a return ticket to Liverpool St. I had a return ticket + a 6 zone day travel card that only cost 12.10 - nice one guys.

Valid from 10:00 the AUD to LST return with Off Peak Day Travelcard is available online or at the ticket office next to the train platforms at Stansted airport. Ticket costs £12.10 a similar ticket from Gatwick Airport costs £10 - using Network Railcard in both cases.

For anyone else interested, the restrictions on the Audley End to London ticket are -

    Mondays to Fridays only -
    OUTWARD TRAVEL
By any train scheduled to arrive at London Liverpool Street or London Kings Cross at or after 1000, Stratford (London) after 0950, Tottenham Hale or Seven Sisters after 0940.
    RETURN TRAVEL
Not valid on any train departing London Liverpool Street or London Kings Cross between 16.29 and 18.34 inclusive (1900 from London Kings Cross)

The reason for the time restriction on the return, is that the ticket is priced by Cross Country Trains.
