  • Hoestly fellow Mse member, you get what you pay for! Cheap paint from one of these local household shops which sells all kinds of plastic goods and cheap tat is like whitewash to be honest. Best having a look around the liked of B&Q/Hombase?Wickes & whatever is near to you & buying one of those big drums of proper white paint from a known brand. These home improvement d.i.y type places have always got some kind of sale/deal type thing going on. Good luck & hth:)

High riase andy is right - don't buy cheap paint. Or brushes or rollersa etc. Its false economy. Trade quality paint is better quality than retail quality. Try your local trade painting and decorating suppliers. Johnstones is a good trade brand as is Macphersons. For Macphersons matt white emulsion I pay less than £16 for 10 litres. My decorator has never had any problems with it. I'm sure you could find a local stockist on line.

I painted my whole house with Wickes Trade Emulsion which is a good price and covered over new plaster very well, but it certainly isn't very durable - one small knock or scrape and it comes straight off.

I used the matt version, which isn't washable either (as I found out :(), so if you need it to be washable or wipeable then go for silk or soft sheen, but if you have kids, pets or have a high traffic household with people in and out brushing against the walls etc then don't bother with the Wickes Matt one! can't speak for Silk, but wish I'd used it instead that's for sure!

    Good Luck! :)

I've always used Crown, not cheap but very nice to paint with and heavily pigmented so it covers well. I'm using a decorator this year as I've got too much to do outdoors, he's a decent bloke who's been at it for 30ys, says he won't use anything other than www.johnstonestrade.com. I went to our local branch yesterday, very reasonable prices.

You get what you pay for with paint, with cheap stuff you may end up doing it again in three years, with the better stuff you may strech it to five and always use Silk, that way you can wipe it down clean, you really can't do that with a matt without marking the wall.

Buy the best paint you can afford.

Also watch for things like buy 2 get a 3rd one free.

    Happy painting.

  • I once used B&Q cheapo range paint and it was terrible - we were painting over some horrid pink emulsion, after every coat it looked as if it was covering, so you would be lulled into a false sense of security, go and get a cuppa and return to see that it had dried... PINK!!!

After about 4 coats I went out and bought some better stuff! However, a friend recommended Wilkos own range, and I was very pleasantly surprised when I used it, very good coverage, and nice paint.

We always use Wickes Trade emulsion, they do a small range of standard colours, covers well though you may need two coats on dark surfaces.
Also consider using it as a white base coat if you want more exotic coluors or are painting a new wall, ceiling etc.
