Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

any body know a phone company were i can get a low contract lenght and no connection charges at start of call eg bt 3 or 6p depends plz help:eek:
Not a lot.I see they operate a minimum call charge see T&C
    5.4
Subject to clause 5.6 below, we will invoice the Customer for and the Customer must pay all
Charges. All customers are registered for per-second billing, there is a minimum call charge in
respect of any call made using the CPS Service and use by such customers of the CPS Service will
be invoiced in one-second increments with partial seconds of usage rounded up to the next full
    second.

i called up and checked it out they charge per second and its only 30 day contract uk calls 1.2p surprisingly good have to say and the minimum call charge is 1 second
  • does any one use phone cards and are they good?

Not if you can make a UK call of unlimited duration for a flat rate of 5p with 1899, 18185 or 18866 though.

I am in a very similar position to the OP,home phone with BT but have my BB with Virgin. I was looking at changing to their 2 for £20 but notice that there is a 7p connection charge for each phone call.

One big problem with VM is that they do not allow you to gain access to indirect call providers (using a 5 or 6 digit prefix). You can access some providers using a freephone number but then the provider usually charges a per minute rate whereas using the prefix method they just charge a connection fee (typically 5p or 6p) and there is no further charge irrespective of length of call. This is very useful for daytime calls which unless you have an "anytime" call plan are chargable per minute with most (all) providers.

VM only give you access to their own broadband service which limits your choice completely. Having said that it is possible to negotiate good rates for their broadband service without taking any other services and IMO the broadband is reliable with good bandwidths available without the restrictions of longer lines which affects many users on BT lines.

Their charges are on top of the BT Line Rental so for exactly the same price, you could get Option 3 for 12 months and have every 01/02/03 call of under 60 minutes free of charge (except dial up Internet calls). If you make less than around 99 peak time 01/02/03 calls a month (on average) it would actually be even cheaper to get 18185 or similar and make peaktime calls via that and get your evening/weekend 01/02/03 calls of up to 60 minutes for free via BT if you are prepared to sign up to a new rolling 12 month contract.

I think you need to be a bit more precise with your figures. You said in your first post that your monthly outgoings to BT is £55. In your latest post you say your last bill was £112 for a quarter. That's only about £37 per month. Which is the correct figure? Your line rental and internet will account for about £30 per month so together with the anonymous call reject makes a total of £33 leaving £4 for call charges. Are your call charges really £10 per month? If you want to keep your internet with BT and keep the call reject service then the only thing you can possibly save on is call charges. £4 is rather high if you only make a "couple" of calls per week but it depends when and how long your calls are. It would be even more un-usual if you calls do cost £10 per month. Your reluctance to use alternative providers limits your choices. You could possible save something on call costs if your calls are mainly in the evenings and weekends by signing up to the Option 2 call plan which is available free if you agree to a running 12 month contract.

You should be able to access all the billing information you need on the BT online billing web pages. There are various options for downloading detailed information once you access individual bills from your Account on the BT website. That would enable you to see exactly what you are paying for.

BT are charging me on my dd £55 per month, it was 41 up until january then they changed it. the last bill on the internet (as they dont send me paper bills) was a total of £112.

i suppose what i was asking was is there any way i can move from bt but keep my bt email address as i want one of those deals where you get everything for about 20 quid a month, because even at 37 pounds a month, its a lot more than other people seem to pay
